iPad 10.5 - How exactly floating and split screen will be?

Folks I'm still a bit confused how this is going to be.

Can any app be left floating AND scalable to whatever size and shape I want?

And what about splitting the screen, if the iPad is in landscape, can I use the top third of the screen to split or is it just for the sides?

For the floating app (I believe they still call it slide over):

-it needs to be an app that uses auto layout and is compatible with the different size classes (similar to slide over since iOS 9)
-the app isn't resizable while in slide over / floating
-it can sit on either side of the screen
-it can also be thrown off the screen to hide, and pulled back on when needed

Split view:

-with iPad in landscape, you get the same split view options as pre-iOS 11. No top/bottom (horizontal) splitting.
-what's new when initiating splitting is the 2nd app being brought in can go to the right or the left side

Yup, like this (can sit on either side of the screen when floating):

I feel like this is decent sign that we may get more 'windowing' in the future. Would be very useful for apps like calculators and other tools.

I also believe that the left split app can be resized to a narrow column now. And that's disappointing about the left/right column thing in portrait mode. Top/bottom would be a lot more useful. With the way the iPad is in iOS 11 with the wide dock at the bottom, I have to wonder if Apple will eventually move the volume buttons, sleep/wake button, headphone jack (unless that goes away in a couple years) and rear Apple logo so that the device is more landscape by design? I'd really like to know if they have data on how much time the iPad is used in landscape vs. portrait. I feel like when the iPad first came out I used it in portrait more often, but now I use it in landscape all the time. It's a lot better orientation for creative apps, watching videos and using the keyboard.

That's right (about the split being able to go narrow to the left). Great question about portrait and landscape. Especially with the 12.9", I can't imagine using it much in portrait.
