Hello,

I have recently discovered that my Smart Keyboard stops working while it is attached to my iPad Pro 10.5. The only keys that work are Cmd+h or Cmd+Tab. All the other keys do nothing. Even removing and reattaching doesn‘t change anything. I either have to restart or wait some time until it will work again.

Anybody else experiencing this? I have iOS 11.0.3 installed on my iPad.

Take a lightly damp, lint-free cloth and clean the contacts of the iPAD. I had this happen with my Logitech keyboard and cleaning the contacts fixed it. Not sure your situation is the same, but I thought I would suggest it. Good luck.

I have just tried cleaning the contacts but it happened again that the keyboard isn‘t responsive. :(

Lately my 12.9 smart keyboard doesn’t work initally either. It’s definitely connected because otherwise when I tap on a text field the onscreen keyboard should pop up, but it doesn’t. I just get the bar at the bottom of the screen. But the ASK keystrokes don’t do anything. In my case however, I only have to turn the ipad screen off and on again for it to start working again. I assume that’s not the case for you?

Strange about cmd h and cmd tab being the only keys that work. I’ll have to remember to try those next time.

In any case, it seems almost definitely a software issue. I’m on ios 11.0. This didn’t happen in ios 10. Hopefully one of the newer updates will fix the issue.

I’ve had this same issue, as well, only to be told by Apple that it isn’t supported. I was literally told to buy another $159 Smart Keyboard after about two years of ownership with no visual damage or wear and tear shown on the product. Clearly defective to me.

They tend to die after a year if you're lucky.

This happens a lot with the smart keyboards. I've had two fail on me (on the 9.7 first-gen IPP and on the 12.9 second-gen IPP). Not much Apple can do other than to replace your keyboard (or ask you to buy a new one). Like the butterfly keyboards, these are poorly designed and fail in normal use -- but they don't generate nearly as much media coverage.

Clean the contacts in iPad and Keyboard
Disable Assistive Touch for mouse connection

Mine stop working if I turn on my Logitech MX Anywhere 2S and try to use the Smartkeyboard.
I think it is a soft problem

We urge Apple fix it

I REALLY MISS STEVE

It’s not a software problem, the Smart Keyboards just aren’t very reliable.

1- THE KEYBOARD is working well
2- you turn ON our the mouse - accessibility
3- The KB stops to work
4- Turn OFF the mouse and.... KB is working

Isn't it a SOFT problem?
Please explain it to me.

Thank you

Occasionally, I have the same issue with Apple's Smart Keyboard - without attempting to use a mouse & fixed by quickly reconnecting. Still, an issue I would be happy to live without. 🙃

go into settings and do a reset. Fixes tons of problems, should be your first step just like on a desktop pc.

When I read that, I think of s.o. who in the past sadly had to look at that all too often.
I feel your pain. 🙏

The fact that I spent an additional $160, with several of you likely having to do the same vs. living without a keyboard cover, drops Apple's brand equity a bit. A small affect on loyal customers can have a lasting impact.
