Ipad 2 activation lock

My wife bought an ipad 2 32gb around 2012. She pulled it out last weekend to mess around with it and maybe try to sell it. After not remembering the passcode I tried to restore it. Now it says activation lock and says it will send a password reset to her me.com account. We haven't used apple products in over 5 years so neither of us know our old appleID. Is there anyway to unlock it or if we take it to apple will they be able to see where she paid for the ipad? Also, neither security questions work, are appleIDs prone to being hacked?

You should contact Apple to have them look into the issue. Activation lock is a server-based lock and it’s Apple’s system. They’ll be able to support you through the process.

When it comes to Activation Lock, it’ll get a little messy.

Basically, your options are to remember the Apple ID password, or provide Apple with a copy of the receipt from the original purchase. If you kept that: great! You should be in the device with Apple’s help in a few days. If you didn’t, then you can try and work with the retailer to obtain a copy.

But Activation Lock is a feature of Find My iPhone and is designed to prevent loss/theft, so basically they won’t be able to do too much unless you have the receipt.
