Imagine my surprise when I got a notification on our backup iPhone 5 to upgrade to 10.3.4, which was just released last month, on July 22, 2019.

So, I looked it up, and it turns out that iOS 9 got updated too to 9.3.6. That means the iPad 2 from 2011 got an iOS update last month too. That means the iPad 2 has now gotten 8.5 years of iOS support. Sort of anyway. :)

Reminds me of this - Apple Releases Mac App Store Update for OS X Snow Leopard.

Happened in 2016, but support for Mac OS X Snow Leopard ended years earlier by this point and it was no longer getting security updates of any kind. To me, no security updates means no support, and neither 10.3.4 nor 9.3.6 appear to include any security fixes.
OK, but IMO this update is arguably even more important than security updates, cuz this bug can render the iDevices virtually unusable without the update. For example, the iPhone 4 has the bug, and dates and times get screwed up now with the iPhone 4.

My primary iPhone (6s Plus) is still running iOS 10.3.3 as I chose not to update to 11 or 12 to maintain 32-bit app compatibility. No issues with the date and time on it. Same goes for my iPhone 5s running 8.4.1, though this device I use less often.
[doublepost=1567111589][/doublepost]This bug is related to the GPS if I understand correctly. What are you doing with the iPhone 4 to cause it to become apparent?

I no longer have my iPhone 4. Gave it away a while back. I was just repeating what was posted online about people getting borked time and location data.

It truly is amazing. :)

I agree that it’s impressive, but it’s also sort of cheating, because this is an extremely extraordinary circumstance which required an update to continue to function.

Edit: I also wanted to add that even without this “cheat” update (as I called it), the iPad 2 was still crazy longevitious (just made that word up), over 5 years. Which I think is becoming more the norm now for iOS devices, but at the time was very exceptional. Just did some minor research and I believe the iPhone 5S currently holds the record. It will hit 6 years of support on Sept 10th, before being “obsoleted” with iOS 13 a week later... The iPad Air is close behind with October being its 6 year anniversary, but iPadOS will have already obsoleted it before turning 6. Fun thought experiment, which device will be the first/next to dethrone the iPhone 5S?

GPS also controls all the worlds timing/clocks. Fun fact: if GPS went down the entire banking system, stock market, and many other essential services would crash. It’s not just for getting to grandma’s house.

It's only for the iPad 2 CDMA version. Was hoping for a Safari browser update since it's broken with a lot of secure web sites but what Apple should really do is allow Safari browser updates through app store independently of iOS updates. In this case iOS update means very little to nothing and iOS 9.x still lags badly.

I connected my iPad 2 (Cellular 64GB GSM) to my Mac and it prompted me to update to 9.3.5. I guess not all of the Cellular models get the update. My iPad 2 is still running iOS 4.3.3 though, so I wouldn't upgrade even if I could.
