Hey all.
First time posting!

Was wondering if anyone is seeing any issues with the Camera app, external microphones and the iPad 2017s?

I've gone on Google hunts and I haven't been able to find any cases that match this issue.

Here's the setup of two iPads I've worked on. Four, if you count the fact that Apple has replaced the iPads twice...
  • iPad 2017
  • Any external microphone.
    • Mine are standard TRRS EarPods, Lightning EarPods, Shure MVi with Shure SM58, RODE VideoMic Me.
  • The default Apple Camera app.

The problem...
  • Sound will record through an external mic for one video recording. If lucky, it will work on two.
  • After that, no video recordings will have sound from any external source.
  • Recordings with the built-in microphone do work.

Here's what we've worked out...
  • The problem does not go away by unplugging/plugging in the microphone.
  • The problem repeats after a restart, restore or recovery (including via iTunes).
  • Doesn't matter if it's front or back camera.
  • All microphones work on other devices (iPhone X, iPad Mini Retina, iPad Pro 1, etc.)
  • After the first video recording, the Shure MVi will occasionally turn on for a split second when a video recording starts and then turn off.
  • The problem has persisted from November. During that time, the devices have gone from iOS 11.2.2 to 11.2.5 at this point.
  • Camera app does not have a Privacy setting, so it's not that.
  • This does NOT happen with...
    • MoviePro
    • iMovie
    • GarageBand
    • FaceTime or FaceTime Audio
Apple recently escalated me to engineering support, so I'll have more updates as I get them, but that's where we're at right now.

Anyone else on this boat?

If anything, anyone have an iPad 2017 lying around who could try it out?
Camera app with a mic, EarPods fine.
