Ipad 2nd generation?

I was going to buy ipad, but after I am looking at my iphone 4. I cannot help but notice that this thing has the best display ever. Will ipad ever had Retina DISPLAY!?

I am not trying to troll... I am just not sure if I should buy ipad now or wait. Of course, there will be new ones sometime in the future.


PS: I got an offer from apple to buy ipad for 399 dollars for 16GB wi-fi. SHOULD I?

The iPad will most likely not see a retina display till 3rd or 4th gen, the amount of ram, CPU, and gpu needed to run a display that size simply won't work in the ipad right now
Just for perspective having 326ppi on the ipad screen size would give you the overall resolution of a 27" iMac

It's unfortunate but I am tending to agree with you harry.

The only "elegant" way to improve the iPad's display resolution is to double it both ways like they did with the iPhone. But, the display resolution would be 2048x1536, almost as much as the 27" iMac. And a spec like that would really put the entire laptop lineup to shame. Suffice it to say though, if the next iPad really did have a display like this I'd be first in line to pick one up!

It's wierd because the only other way I see it would be to give the iPad a higher intermediate resolution but then it would run into all those resolution issues where apps written for the original iPads would not scale/look good on the new iPad...

So it's too bad because now the iPad will always be tainted by what people will probably begin referring to as "fisher price resolution" (when compared to the screen on the iPhone and likely eventually the iPod touch- the only other iOS devices) because the display spec will always pale in comparison but the technology to fix it isn't really quite there yet. Knowing the ppi of the new iPhone, I personally would have a hard time paying for the iPad as it is now, because the screen resolution is all of a sudden appearing to be incredibly low..

There is much more to a device than the pixel pitch.

I agree with you. But, the display is the first thing people will get impression on from devices like cellphones and ipad. (or any electronics with display)
I have iphone 4 and it blows ipad out of water with retina display. I mean isn't ipad suppose to be something that will be able to replace laptops in the far future? People will talk about the display difference between iphone and ipad. Apple will have no choice. This retina display is the key feature on iphone 4 and I expect it to be on the Ipad. Maybe, they might hold off a bit with high costs, but I don't think they can hold it off for too long. Either retina display or use OLED.
