iPad 3 preventing iPhone from sending iMessage effects?

My iPad 3rd gen is stuck with iOS 9. That's fair. However when I'm sending an effect with my iPhone 6 Plus, the recipient (also on 6 Plus) isn't receiving the actual effect, only the substitute text - "Sent with Slam Effect". I'm receiving the the effects just fine on the phone, and iPad appropriately receives the text substitute.

I can iMessage myself on the iPhone and the effects come thru just fine. Any ideas?

Why do you think your iPad 3 has any effect on it if it seems that it's the other recipient that is having an issue?

I have no proof one way or the other. I'll check out those threads and report back.
