Ok, I currently have a MIFI which i use with my iPad 3G 64Gb. Granted I rarely or haven't even leveraged the internal 3G yet from AT&T because of my MIFI but I did get the device in the event I needed connection and didn't have my MIFI with me.

My question is this, with the new rate/plan changes. I'm hearing that you can be grandfathered in. From my understanding if you currently have an iPhone plan and you don't "switch" to the new plans, your currently supposedly unlimited data plan on the iPhone is grandfathered in which makes sense. If I want tethering that's when I will lose it because I will be forced to choose on of the new data plans.

From an iPad perspective, since the data plan is "per need per use" basis (granted you have to cancel before the 30 days if you don't need it afterwards), I'm assuming with the new plan implementation, basically I'm going to be forced to move to the new plan because I'm currently not "signed on" with the internal 3G on the iPad with AT&T in the event I need it in the future and don't have my MIFI.

So...is this correct that before June 7th, if I want the unlimited plan, I technically will have to sign up with 3G on AT&T on the iPad and never cancel it, otherwise, the next time I sign in, I will be forced to choose a plan?

I'm assuming this is the case and well I guess to some extent it works but I like the work "unlimited".

Yes you are correct - sign up before June 7th and you get grandfathered in...after June 7th 2 GB cap

I didn't want to look at this way but to some degree, I guess this is AT&T's way to make you move over or start paying for the service. Unfortunately, I would like the unlimited plan but by having a MIFI, this kinda defeats the purpose so this stinks.

Also, the more I think of it, AT&T is basically also locking you in for an indefinite period of time if you want the "grandfathered" status.

Wow. Pretty smart.

yeah i have the same question since i only just recvd my ipad sunday but signed up on monday...since we only pay month to month how does this work ?

or does it count on when you first signed up ?

It counts from when you first sign up....

So you signed up on Monday the 31st.

June 31st you will be hit for another 30 dollars for your unlimited data plan, and so on until you tell ATT to cancel it. Once you do that and decide to go back and use 3g you would be stuck on the 2 gb plan.

I actually had the AT&T data card for 2 years on my laptop which was nice to have and recently switched to a MIFI because I didn't want to be locked into one device any longer. Works as good as the AT&T service in terms of upload/downloads or I can't tell the difference but I can't justify another 30 bucks a month on top of my Verizon just so I can have a dedicated constant connection to the internet on my iPad. It's not like you can tether currently using your iPad which would then probably defeat the purpose of having a MIFI (well not completely) but at least I can leverage the "data" service to other devices.

I do have an iPhone which through JB'ng the device you can leverage it's internet service to other devices but the fact of the matter is battery usage and I use my iPhone as a phone so it's not completely practical but I guess if you need internet service and don't want to dish out extra money on a MIFI or AT&T data card, then the iPhone tethering is an option.

How does one sign up for 3G unlimited iPad without an iPad?

Mine won't be here till mid June.
