Heres a question some might think silly initially but it does have some merit.

For those of you that have both the wifi version and the 3g version could you please comment on the following:

For the ipad 3G, with 3G turned off, remote location services turned off, bluetooth turned off and WIFI turned on; does the battery last the same as the WIFI version running similar tasks.

Im told that even with these components turned off the battery will be depleted quicker than the WIFI version. Sounds silly initially but there may be some truth behind it but just might not be measurable. The same person also said that the more memory i.e 64GB as opposed to 16GB will also use more power, however he said that again it maybe to small to notice.

Anyway might be a good test for somebody lucky enough to own both a wifi and 3g versions of the ipad.

Cheers

I could test this though my 3G is 16GB and my wife's WIFI is 32GB...shouldnt make enough of a difference to really notice anything. Ill test it tomorrow running the same app for the same amount of time and see what happens.

I'll bet the difference, if any is so marginal that you would need to test dozens of devices to have any meaningful conclusion.

I have used 3G only for about 3-4 hours doing the Internet and have 60% left.

The battery is simply not an issue in either 3G or WiFi modes.

Near 10 hours a day is MORE than enough for 99% of the people and yet I see SO MANY stressing over the battery. The battery on the iPad is overkill compared to most other devices, the way it SHOULD be!

Looking forward to your results, i dont expect much if any difference but will be interesting nonetheless

It's overkill when you think how slim the iPad really is. 10 hours with that screen size on a device that's the size of a thin magazine is simply amazing and doesn't get noted enough.

A family or company is different from "someone", in which case the ownership is not singular.

Pedantic s....pedantic s....

Anyway, what if i bought two; one for me and one for the wife... The wife doesn't technically own it because i purchased it... but again no doubt you will ask "is it a gift?" or "are you lending it to her?".... hmm depending on how you answer that might change the scenario

LOL :)

I have owned a 32G wifi model and now own two 3G models. The wifi's battery ran better than both 3G's. The wifes 32G 3G's battery lasts longer than my 64. My test was running both on Navigon while traveling for a good hour. The wifi model just seemed to drain a lot slower. With the same surfing habbits, the wifi had a higher percentage left at the end of the day.

I was starting to thing there was something wrong with my 64's battery.

I didn't turn off 3G but it is running over Wifi streaming movies from Netflix. It is also jailbroken. It is going through the battery slightly faster (43% vs 49% after 8 hours of use) but it could be because the 3G radio was not turned off or because of the jailbreak. Im going to run another test tomorrow with the 3G radio turned off and see what happens.

So just to clear this up, your wifes ipad 3G 32GB battery lasts longer than your ipad 3G 64GB however your WIFI only model lasts longer than all doing the same tasks? I thought Navigon requires a GPS to work?
