I have my ipad tethered to my iphone 3g using MyWi as I see a lot of others have done. I haven't been using this much more than I would use myiphone but since I've only be using it for a couple of days I thought it would be interesting to see what it's done to mydata usage. Obviously myrouter ismy first choice but when I'm not at home the iphone steps up.

I just checked my ATT bill and my usage for March is 3 times that of my previous months typicall usage. Thats threee times the monthly average burned through in 2 days of tethering. Thats huge...

If the 3g version of the ipad burns through this much data it's going to overnight hit the ATT network like a bomb.

I assume richer content is using more data but I'm suprised as my browsing habits haven't altered that much.

Anyone else with Mywi seeing massive data increases on their ATT summary?

Not unexpected but the size of the increase in such a short space is remarkable.

Follow it through to a succesful launch of 3g ipads and the ATT network will surely struggle.

It's burning through 3x more data because you are using 3x more data by using the device more and visiting more sites. The one exception would be sites that switch to mobile versions when they seen an iPhone. Those would load less data (on the iPhone).

Otherwise, any given web page passes the same amount of data to load it on an iPhone as it does to load it on an iPad. A page is a page is a page.

You are using it more! It just doesn't seem like it because it is so new.

I noticed the MB were adding up FAST when tethered to MyWi.

And people think that ATT is NOT going to know that you are tethering to your account...especially since the spike came after the iPad was released?

There are times in life when you take chances. what they gonna do? ban folks? Then we move on from their tired network. I paid for a Data Plan so i'm using it.

It's not three times more. It's 3 months worth in three days. My data usage for this month is three times higher having added myfi to my phone at the weekend. That is a lot more data than I woukd have expected.

Hmmm... If this is true then A 250mb plan for $14.99 wont last long with the 3G iPad. I have a MyWi too, but the iPad hasn't left the house yet.

May be video. iPhone strips video quality down to almost non existent. The iPad plays the highest quality video, so data will go through the roof. I seriously doubt ATT will keep this policy very long. For me 3G at my house is way faster than my Internet so I am interested to see how this plays out.

Think of it this way:

There are many millions of iPhone users currently using data on at&t's network. Apple has sold a few hundred thousand wifi ipads, and most projections seem to indicate the 3G model will sell less than the wifi version (which is probably a reasonable guess since it costs considerably more). So even if the 3G iPad uses a lot more data than the iPhone, a few hundred thousand of them is still nothing compared to current iPhone data usage.

Unless apple ends up selling MILLIONS of the 3G iPad very quickly, I don't really think it'll affect the network that much. Reasonable?
