So I sold my 64Gb WiFi to a guy in New Zealand and now I have a tough choice to make, I guess tomorrow will help me decide, but maybe not.

I'm going to the car show tomorrow in NYC and might buy some new glass for my Canon 7D, or I can buy the 64Gb 3G since I bought around $100 of apps for it anyway.

What do you think?

You can't buy a 3G tomorrow anyway.

Depends on your current lens collection, and what you need.

The cheapest L is a 70-200 f/4 non IS. That's $639 new.

Get the iPad, L glass is overrated. I currently have two lenses that perform just as well for half the price or less. The Canon 85 f/1.8 and the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 :) You can also throw the 100 and 135 f/2.8 in there. All are under $600.

I've got the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM and Canon 50mm f/1.8 II

Thinking of purchasing Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

What do you shoot? I shoot glamor and fashion. I have actually shot some national covers with that Nifty Fifty :) I like the 17-40 on my 50D but its way too wide to shoot models on my 5D.

The benefit of L glass is null imo...

Buy the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (I plan on it). Better coverage for pretty much the same image quality. Anyone who has found differences between the 17-40L and the 17-50mm is seriously just nitpicking, and even they will admit that they can live without those tiny, miniscule, seemingly impediments.

Plus, you get more range and a faster glass with the Tamron. The Tammy is def next on my list. Plus, you could afford both the iPad AND the Tamron. Considering the 3G version is not even out yet though, you won't be making buying one tomorrow, as mentioned before.

Why would you want a 17-40 if you already have the 16-35? The 17-40 is way slower; too slow for available light any time past 4pm or indoors. If I were you, I'd sell the 16-35 and check ebay for a nice older 20-35 f2.8 L for around $500. One of the most underrated lenses Canon made. Then put the rest of the money into your iPad.

Or just get the 50mm 1.2 and thank me later. :D

Agree with this guy - getting a 17-40 makes no sense when you own a 16-35.

I was never a big fan of the 17-40. L build quality for sure, but the IQ was only ok, IMO. (I used to own one)

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I think this depends on your current kit and what your needs are in terms if lenses.

The 16-35mm would be a good lens for a car show with the 2.8 aperture. No point in getting the 17-40mm IMO. Just get the iPad and enjoy it.

On a side note, for those of you without L glass, once you get your first L you will never go back.

I shoot professionally, have owned and sold them and shot with just about every L glass lens Canon has made. Bottom line is there are at least 5 lenses out there that will match (or in some cases outperform) any L glass in IQ, sharpness, bokeh etc...for much less money.

Is one of them the Sigma 50mm f/1.4? Please ellaborate on these lenses, I'd love to buy some!

You left out build quality, which is where L glass performs. I shoot in rugged terrain and sometimes freezing conditions and the weather sealing and overall quality of L lenses can not be surpassed.

I chose the iPad - 32gb 3G.

No sense putting L glass on my 20D - i'll wait until i can get teh 7D! LOL!!

Glass > body

After owning the majority of the non super-telephoto L lenses I can say that they are slightly over rated by the average ameteur photographer. These people won't get much more out of the IQ. Unless it's the wide aperture you need I'm tempted to suggest people hang onto their money until they have a steady income from their hobby.

Anyway, which lens are you considering? Edit: I'd pass on the 17-40, it's barely worthy of the L designation. The 17-55 canon crop lens is an order of magnitude greater- and the 16-35 is much better as well.

My favorite are the 35 and 85. The 85 is just pure magic (if you can justify spending $2,000 on a fixed focal length 85mm lens...) :D

the glass will hold it's value much longer than the ipad.. you can always buy the 2nd generation ipad
