iPad 3G questions

Hi,

Posted this on the official apple forums but have gotten a less than stellar response, thought I'd try here!


I plan on buying the Wifi+3G version (hopefully once some sort of fix for the rampant Wifi issues are available) And I live in Canada.

1) Is is true that the iPad will come unlocked? How do you know? Is there a link that can prove it?

2) I plan to somewhat frequent the USA throughout the year and was wondering if I can just buy a ATT Sim card and use that for 3G while in the USA? Can you just buy a new Micro Sim from them for $10? $20?

3) Can i use my Canadian credit card to buy a $15 month package for the ATT USA 3G or does it have to be a USA credit card?

I can't answer any of your questions but that doesn't stop me from commenting that it is my opinion that the use of the term "rampant" to describe the wifi issues that some people had is just a tad over blown.

It's the least we can do!
Since the 3G is not out yet it is difficult to say what the rules will be but unless there is ATT service in Canada I guess you won't be able to use it.
Really you need to wait until Apple has an agreement with whoever will provide your data service. Until the international release happens at the end of May I doubt that there will be answers for most of your questions. You can try using your Canadian Credit Card to pay for a US account but I would expect you need a US mailing address to do so. We don't know but try and tells us what the result is. Good Luck!

yes you can go to the att store and pick up micro sim for like a few bucks.

i dont know prob tho.

I think being snarky to the guy about his opinion is a bit silly considering you're asking if the iPad is unlocked and if anyone confirms that it is then you want proof. Here's an idea, watch the Keynote. Your answer is right there. It's unlocked, go find proof if you don't believe the answer you're given. Having an unlocked iPad doesn't mean much, yet.

You can go to AT&T and buy a micro sim card. Price, unknown. Why don't you call them?

You can use whatever credit card you want so long as it pays your bill in US currency.


I'd be interested to see the responses you're getting to your basic, easily self-answered, questions over at the Apple forums.

So far when I posted this thread I had got a guy saying warranty is international, very helpful

Of course I want some sort of proof, someone just saying "Yes or no" isn't good enough without some sort of backup. Just a link or something was all I was asking for....

I am NOT planning on buying a USA iPad, I'm getting the Canadian version when it comes out in late may. I read through the iPad manual and found it is unlocked.

The only issue left is of whether or not I can use a Canadian credit card to punch in the credit card info, it would be stupid to think you can't use it

The site says

Sign up on your iPad.

You can sign up for 3G data service with AT&T at any time — right on your iPad. There’s no need to visit a store or call customer service. Just tap Settings and choose Cellular Data. Then type in your user information, select a plan, and enter your credit card information.

And the picture on http://www.apple.com/ipad/3g/ seems to indicate that it is not billed through your itunes account

Yes, they come unlocked, you know because in the beginning when your purchase an iPad you don't sign a 2 year contract with them.

No, from what I heard the SIM card will probably be inside already and you really can't purchase it no were else, maybe EBAY or Craigslist.

I work with international students at my school and they pay their internet services using their credit cards, so most likely it will work. The worst thing that could happen is that you're denied services.
