iPad 3G - Stream UK video to US over VPN

I have an ipad 3G with vpn access to a uk server via BlackVPN. I have tried tvcatchup and the BBC iplayer but the video stream never plays for longer than a couple of seconds before freezing. Am I expecting too much or does anyone else have success watching UK video this way?

It's only unwatchable over 3G only. At home on wifi, the VPN connection is only ok, for instance, on my mac mini, BBC iplayer shows that are in HD will not play at all.

Then it is your VPN Service. I have a VPN service, and can watch both iplayer ant tvcatchup over 3G with almost no pauses that I can remember.
