She probably doesn't need it, but something a bit faster with a nicer screen and probably lighter weight might be a nice thing.

I'm actually selling a 5th and 6th generation. I wasn't planning to list them here because I was just gonna try to sell locally, but PM if you're interested. Both in like new condition, having had cases/screen protectors since purchase.

Personally, using the 3rd gen feels like cruel and unusual punishment to me. I remember the keyboard lag on the 3rd gen being so bad I could type an entire sentence before the letters show up.

with a nicer screen

actually, the screen is retina and still awesome as of today.

but iPad 3 (march 2012) is just a pain to use for most tasks, upgrading to a basic iPad is a good idea.
the old one sells for 100-150.
an up to date iPad for $200 is a no-brainer, it's gonna be a night & day difference in user experience.

My grandmother (80+) had been using iPad 3 for quite a few years and it worked great for her. We upgraded her iPad to a newer model last year. We did so mostly for the weight difference. Even a 100-200g difference made all the difference to her. I think it's a great idea to update to a newer model only because of the lower weight.

Just for emails and Google though?
The $249 7th gen comes with 1 year warranty, new battery and no wear and tear.

You only save maybe $50 or so going the used 5th/6th gen route and you wouldn't know if the previous owner used their iPad in the loo or something.

get her a maxed out 12.9 pro....

in all seriousness, the new ipad would work just fine for her, and it's cheap compared to the cost of the 3rd gen when it was new....

Does email or Google happen to be battery intensive?
No more than usual. My mom definitely noticed a decrease in battery life going from an iPad 3rd gen to an iPad Pro 9.7 though.

Again, the 7th gen costs just a little bit more than 5th/6th gen, and it's brand new with warranty, not used.

We do have a 5th gen and it performs fine. The 5th gen's just poor value compared to the 7th gen factoring used 5th/6th gen pricing and the frequent $249 7th gen sale price. Now if the 7th gen was selling for the full $329 MSRP, then the equation changes.

Used 5/6th gen is close to $200. New 7th gen is $249, complete with full warranty and brand new battery. And it has more RAM and a bigger screen. It’s a no-brainer IMO, if you’re going to update from the iPad 3.
Yup for sure, doesn’t matter if the apps are battery intensive or not, batteries still degrade with age and usage. $50 for a new battery, bigger screen and full warranty seems like an easy choice. Not sure why automaticapple isn’t grasping that part of it.. oh well lol
