I bought this thing for £25. Wasn't aware 99% of the app store would be unavailable.

I want to get pictures on it from my mac, but nothing seems to work.

I can't even download an email client to email the pics..

Is there any way at all I can at least add pics or is this just a completley worthless piece of junk now?

What exactly did not work?
I just tested the following options on my 1st gen iPad with iOS 5.1.1:
  1. Connect it via cable to your Mac > select the iPad in your Finder sidebar > switch to "Photos" > select the folders with photos you want to sync/add to your iPad > press "Sync"
  2. There is also the (paid) app Photo Manager Pro that has a "Transfer" Mode, meaning you can access the iPad from your Mac's browser and directly upload photos to it.
  3. Or you can use the (paid) app FileBrowser to access SMB shares directly from your iPad.
I already have the apps installed but cannot connect to the AppStore anymore on iOS 5.
The iPad 4 can run iOS 10 but you probably must download new apps first on a current device so you can download the "last compatible version" on the old iPad.

Just follow the instructions in your screenshot. Apparently iCloud Photos is active on the iPad. Did you set it up this way or does it still have the account of the previous owner?? If it is your account:
- Either disable iCloud Photos on the iPad in the iCloud section. Then the screen should change.
- Or, if you have iCloud Photos also enabled on your Mac, simply import/drag the photos in question into your Mac's Photos.app found in the "Applications" folder.
