Ipad 4 Password Lost & Locked

This is an old iPad 4, and tried to login. But the 4 digit passcode has been forgotten. After 6 times trying, then the iPad has been locked out.

It has never been connected to PC before. And it is displaying message "IPad is locked out, so try again in 5 minutes" When tried again after 5 minutes, it locks up again displaying this time "Try again in 1 hour" and it keeps going that way.

What is best way to unlock this? Maybe in the end it need to be factory reset? = losing all the data?

If you know the Apple ID password that’s logged in just restore it and hopefully there’s a recent iCloud backup

Put the iPad in DFU and try again. You can also download the latest ispw file from ipsw.me and hold down option when clicking restore to select the downloaded ispw file.

Yes, I put it to DFU, and tried again.

The iTunes extracts downloaded software for a while, and then it pops up an error message.

And it shows following link for more info. I have tried to modify the hostfiles in UNIX part, and there is no line for "GS.APPLE.COM"in my host file, so it doesnt apply according to the support page.

I do not use any security software in my MAC PRO, and no firewalls. So I am wondering if my MacPro OS being 10.7.5 might be causing the update/restore failure?
 
The last update iTunes for 10.7.5 was in August 2015. I'd wager it doesn't support iOS 11. Mavericks is the oldest version of macOS that will run a version of iTunes that support iOS 11.
 
Should I borrow my friend's Mac with later version of OSx, and try again?

Yes, my Mac is a very old MacPro 1.1 from 2006-2007, so I think OSx 10.7.5 is the latest it can run. But strange that it runs latest iTunes 12.2.25? Not sure if it is the latest iTunes, but when checked for update, it says that it is already the latest version iTunes.

My friend has a PC laptop with Windows 10, and Mac with OSx 10.8 or 10.9, so maybe iTunes in these machines could bring back this iPad 4 into life from locked state at present?
 
That version of iTunes is the last update apple allowed for 10.7 and it won’t support the mini 4 or iOS 11. If you’ve got a friend close by that will let you use their computer do that. You can also just install windows 7 (or 10 even) on a separate partition on your Mac Pro and use that.

Thank you for your info and advice. Much appreciated. Will update how it turned out. My friend will be able to lend me the computers in next week or two. Cheers.

it says that if you have the latest version the system can run. And the actual current version is 12.7. I believe iOS 11 needs 12.5.

so yes if your friend has a Mac or a PC that can run that version you can try to restore the iPad with that.

I must wait until this weekend, or Easter holiday time to borrow the PC or Mac from my friend.

It is so bad for Apple making older system not usable = no support for older system = NOT GOOD.
 
My response is not going to help one bit ... but this is probably one of the reason I completely skip the password and touch setup. I skipped both steps for my old ipad 4 retina and my newest ipad pro 12.9. I worry about forgetting my ipad password and worry about touch not working. Note: I don’t know exactly know what that touch does however. I just never bothered to set either up.
 
I have taken off passcode from the other iPad. It is so frightening that if you forget the passcode, and the device turns into a brick. = What are they playing at?

I feel it's over the top. I mean who would steal ipads? Phones and pads are everywhere these days. It's so easy to forget passcode with using different devices and accounts these days. Once you forget the passcode, the device is unusable for long time until you ask so many people how to unlock it, and it is just not good idea at all. We are not living in a world where everyone is trying to steal your iPads.

Just way over the top.

Yes we do, and it would be much more prevalent if it weren't for features like this. We also live in a world where governments will attempt to access your data without a warrant. Sadly it's also world where people prefer to blame large corporations instead of taking responsibility for their own actions, or in this case lack thereof.

It's so easy to forget passcode with using different devices and accounts these days.

And yet millions some how manage to remember their passcodes every day.

I use IPad to store some study materials - nothing sensitive. I should have not bothered with passcode non-sense from the start.

Not, if they have 2x iPads and 2x Samsung tablets, and mobile phone, laptop, desktop, Facebook, twitter, eBay and amazon account and a few forum accounts.

And millionaires don’t try to make more money? Same principle. Thieves steal and resell to make more money not to just add to their collection of devices.
 
It's not just OTT passcode recovery procedure by Apple, but real pain is older Mac computers and OSx are just not supported at all by them.

For punishment of using older Mac OSx 10.7.5 and iTunes, they broke the IPad IOS during passcode recovery attempt further making it totally unrecoverable.

You're not required to have a passcode at all. Just because Apple strongly encourages you to use one, that doesn't mean you have to. If you don't want one, don't set one. But it makes no sense at all to cry about having to remember your passcode after you've set one.

What are you going to do when you get out into the real world and work for a company where they DO require you to set a password, which must be at least 18 characters long, with upper, lower, numeric, and special symbols, expires every 90 days, and you can't reuse your previous 10 passwords? I hope you don't plan on going to your manager and crying about how you can't work because you can't ever remember your password then. He'll probably escort you out of the building, laughing the entire way.

Again, no sympathy here. I just sold off my early 2011 MacBook Pro. The ports were failing left and right because the motherboard was starting to go, that's how old it was. And yet I still had High Sierra running on it. If you want your 10+ year old system to run the latest and greatest OS, please switch to Linux or Windows. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be enjoying MacOS for one of the primary reasons that makes it great; there's no useless cruft that's been left in there to support some ancient beige box that was made back when Pogs were still popular.

I work for myself, and always will. So your some remote imaginatory case trying to insinuate smething is not really relevant to this case, I am afraid.

I have been talking about my own case of iPad usage, and that iPad had been left in the draw for about 10 months, because it was a backup device, in case others are filled with data. Not looking for sympathy, but just saying.

No thanks to deranged insinuation fueled with odd imagination.
[doublepost=1521829565][/doublepost]Apple hardware is excellent, they run forever. So as my IT works don't need high processing powers, old legacy systems run quite fine for me. Back in the days when people nothing better do in their lives yearned and lived for adrenaline rush of updating their OS is over. I used to do it when I was teens, now it doesn't interest me to keep updating whenever OS writers announce new versions. I have better things to do in life than chase latest OS updates. If you find that cool, its your business. I am quite happy running old OS.
