iPad 4th gen can’t sign into iCloud

Hi y’all,

I’m trying to sign into iCloud on my iPad on iOS 10.3.3 and I’m getting the error “verification failed - unable to connect to iCloud”. I’ve tried all of the steps available online like reset network settings, reset date and time, reset Apple ID password, etc. but it still won’t sign in. I can see the iPad under my devices in my Apple ID on my iPhone, but it won’t complete the sign in process for the iPad. Has anyone come across this, and how did you resolve it?

I'm having the exact same problem and have also tried all of the googled remedies to resolve.

There doesn't seem to be any outage. I'm experiencing exactly the same issue.

What I suspect, but can't find a definite article on, is that iCloud is now blocking that particular iPadOS and older.

I would have hoped there would have been an announcement, before they cut us off at the knees though.

I have just reset mine to factory defaults, removed from my Apple account and the whole shebang.

Restored the firmware from iTunes.

None of this has helped so avoid the pain yourself. Hopefully this is a temporary issue. What annoys me the most is that I can't even sign out of iCloud on the device...

I managed to get mine working, but only after a full reset. When prompted for Apple ID details, I said that I don't have one, and not to bother me again.

I then signed in to the App and iTunes store (only) and dismissed warnings/reminders about iCloud.

Looks like this is purely an iCloud issue.

I know this isn't a fix, but a crappy workaround, but it revived my iPad so I can at least stream my shows as I normally do.

@terraincognita22 @dingo.au Thanks for adding your experiences! It's pretty frustrating as my husband's iPad 2 on iOS 9 can still connect to iCloud which is so weird. I have an open case with Apple, and they're reaching out to their engineering team to see what can be done here to resolve the situation. I'll let y'all know what they say - I'm expecting a call from them tomorrow

Same thing with me trying to sign my son onto an iphone 5 (ios10.3.4). Was on the phone with an apple genius but no luck. Factory restored multiple times using a mac and windows. Even though i received the "Verification Failed There was an error connecting to iCloud.", the iphone is added as a device under appleid.apple.com

It does seem like icloud server isn't fully authenticating the sign in.

Logged with Apple Care and they are aware of the issue, it is a "known issue". From what a I can see online iOS 9 is fine ? Is this the case ?

That’s it! My husband’s old iPad 2 on iOS 9 can connect so it’s really weird! I have another call in a week with apple so I’ll keep y’all posted

That Worked!
Have been going nuts trying to get an iPad 4th Gen to sign in.......resets......factory reset......nothing worked - just kept getting the Verification Failed message every time I tried to sign-in, ( and I know the account and pwd details are correct!). After a factory Reset/Restore I skipped the initial sign-in stage during Setup ( just to get the pad up and running) and then signed in via the iTunes-App Store link........went straight in - Apple ID accepted and my name etc now appears in the top line. Yet to try signing into other Apps like FaceTime etc........will report back!
Obviously some sort of bug or incompatibility with IOS 10.3.3 ??

UPDATE:- Well, although the above will get you signed into the iPad it seems that signing into iCloud or FaceTime still doesn't work.....so only a 'part-fix'. This HAS to be an issue with the way the server is handling the authentication process from older machines.......so come on Apple, these machines aren't bin-fodder just yet !!

Same exact issue for my iPad gen 4 with 10.3.3. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I'm hoping that Apple fixes this and that someone reports out the fix here.

I also have that problem, I have an iPhone 5c running 10.3.3. Hope this gets fixed, as I need to back up my WhatsApp messages.

Phoned Apple Support again and they are aware of a "iCloud Server Issue" and it is fixed apparently Is it ?? I don't have a iOS 11 Device here.

seems to me this is more cheaper to hire a person to tell you this
than to post something or warn ios10 users.

Yes, saw similar post in Apple Community about Sierra/High Sierra(as I've posted before in this thread) and tried similar thing on iOS, installed Apple Cert by downloading it using Safari. Now instead of Settings app showing error, authentication seems go through but nothing happens.?

Did anybody find work around for iOS?

I had this issue too since Saturday when I came back from Pittsburgh. The App Store and the iTunes Store still work. I think they should restart and reset their iCloud service to fix this bug. Some third party apps still receive updates for iOS 10 like PAC-MAN.

I have exactly the same issue on my iPad 10.3.3. I have just talked with Apple support which said ‘well the iPad is old. This is what I should expect’ ? without any warning.

I can’t login iCloud that means no access to backup/restore, photos, iCloud Drive etc.

If I go to the support page etc Backup/Restore should be supported on IOS 5 and up.

I really hope that Apple will do something about this so I can use my perfect working old iPad.

I'm not sure if I can reproduce but I've somehow managed to trick iOS and iCloud to accept iCloud account input.

What I did was

1. Install intermediate Apple cert(refer Sierra/High Sierra issue from this thread)
2. tried to login with iCloud account in Settings app
3. Make sure Settings app get stuck in the login loop(might have to install additional certs to reproduce) for at least few minutes
4. Kill Settings app
5. Remove intermediate cert
6. Reopen Settings app

What I couldn't do is activate iMessage with Apple ID after above process. Might want to activate it before doing above.

If I have to reset the device, I might try again to reproduce.... until then, I'll keep it as is.

That intermediate cert is only valid until May 21 2022 in my time zone(maybe 20th in other time zone) so this is only effective for a month for sure.

i referred them to their iCloud system requirements page.

Minimum system requirements by feature​

To use iCloud, you need at least iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPad, or iPad mini; or at least OS X Lion 10.7.5 on a Mac.

Yes i also have this issue. Was pulling my hair out for hours. Logging in via the appstore etc works. But still limits other icloud features. hopefully they fix this soon.
