I was given a 32 iPad 7th Gen to look at because, when it is powered up, goes straight into recovery mode with the lightning cable on the screen. Apparently, this happened after an iPad OS update.

I tried to do an update, restore, and update and restore in iTunes and finder on two different MacBooks, a Windows 10 desktop, different USB ports, and different lightning cables with the iPad in recovery mode and DFU mode. It always fails with a 4013 error.

The iPad was activated on December 25, 2019, brought to the Apple for diagnostic testing on January 29, 2021, and my friend was told she needs to buy a replacement because of a logic board failure.

There is no physical or liquid damage at all.

Is there anything else I can try? The iPad was a month out of warranty when this happened. I have had iPads before and they lasted for years with any problems.

The previous owner likely activated it on accident while trying to update the iPad or something like that. I have heard a similar story here before.

One month out of warranty.... You would think the folks at the Apple Store she took it to would replace it anyway. This is in Canada, right? Have her take it to another Apple Store to see what they say.

Like you, my iPads last for years on end. They become obsolete but keep on going.

I'd say the Apple Store techs are pretty much the definitive source. I'm not sure there's anything you could do that would be an improvement over their analysis and recommendation.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I will try another Apple store.
