hi

has any one have the new iPad 8 have the done a geek bench yet ?

Since it has the same processor and presumably the same RAM as the Air 3, shouldn't it be pretty much the same?

We don't know if Apple downclocked it. The latest iPod touch has A10 but with its low clock rate, it only performs at A9 level.

Here is a screenshot from the 8th gen iPad - just got it today. Looks like it has the exact same specs as the iPad mini 5?

thanks and it looks like the same 3GB of ram has well I wonder do we get DDR 3 ram or the new DDR 4LX ram

RAM’s usually dictated by chipset so it’s bound to be DDR4. Doesn’t A10 use DDR4 as well? Besides, there probably would’ve been some performance drop with DDR3.

The battery life seems better than the 7th gen perhaps? Maybe the a12 is more efficient? Hard to say since I’m only on the first charge - it came with a 100% charge from the factory. Seems great so far! Very nice screen quality as well - very even with no issues. Very snappy performance.

Very nice to hear that, regarding screen quality, isn't it same as 7th gen?

Yes - same screen - got a good one this time I think -although I believe these are pretty consistent generally?

Mine came with 85% that’s that mean anything?
I was actually surprised by that

I don’t think so - most new iPads I have had were around 80-90% charged when first powered up. I ordered mine from Apple on launch day and it came straight from Nanjing, China. Maybe that’s why it was still holding a full charge?

I checked the battery in settings - shows a full charge done on Sept 8 - must have been the build date.

Good to know that it isn't under-clocked. Phew!

Yes there would be absolutely no point whatsoever for Apple to underclock the A12 in the new iPad 8, as there is no thermal constraints to worry about in a larger iPad chassis. With iPhones its different though as they have smaller chassis E.g the A13 in the iPhone SE is slightly downclocked for heat dissipation and to conserve battery life.

The A10 in the iPod Touch is under-clocked too.

iPod Touch has historically used underclocked silicon. I don't think it's ever a good comparison with iPad.

  • iPod Touch 4th Gen: underclocked A4
  • iPod Touch 5th Gen: underclocked A5
  • iPod Touch 6th Gen: underclocked A8
  • iPod Touch 7th Gen: underclocked A10

However, iPad has been overclocked on a few occasions, or at least runs at full clock.

  • iPad 2: 1 GHz A5 (iPhone 4S was 800 MHz)
  • iPad Air: 1.4 GHz A7 (iPhone 5S was 1.3 GHz)
  • iPad mini 4: 1.5 GHz A8 (iPhone 6 was 1.4 GHz)

Yes makes sense as the larger iPad chassis provides a greater TDP envelope so chips can work to a higher clock speed. Interestingly the A12 in the iPad Air 3 which has a Geekbench 5 score of 2864 (IPad 8 will have similar score), where as the iPhone XS Max with it’s A12 getting 2617, with both on the same clock speed of 2.5 ghz. The smaller size of the phone obviously causes thermal throttling.

yes, also the OG Ipad pro was clocked higher than the smaller 9.7 pro, both with A9X, and the OG air was clocked higher than the mini 2 (both A7)
