So, I just bought the 8th gen iPad 32gb and immediately after got a great deal on an iPad Pro 12.9 1st gen 128gb (almost $150 less than the iPad 8th). So now I have both, but don't need both.

My main uses will be some drawing with my Apple Pencil, regular surfing (checking email, etc) and occasionally watching video and writing documents with the Smart Keyboard.

Which one of the two would you keep if it was you?

Will the A12 chip on the 8th be lightyears ahead of the A9X? (I don't care about any of the other different specs)

Thanks!

for single app use the difference is not huge, but still noticeable, but for multitasking (including moving between apps) A12 is much faster that the dual core A9X, despite the 12.9 having more RAM. For drawing the 12.0 is much better (screen size and quality). For videos the larger screen is much better too. If I had to choose it would be the 12.9 anyday, unless it's for use outside home

Thanks! That's what I was thinking too. Plus the 12.9 was over $100 cheaper ?

Not sure how long iPadOS updates will be around for the first generation iPad Pro and the first generation lacks the ProMotion display in later iPP models.

I’d keep the 8th gen

The 8th wouldn't have Promotion either though right?
Any reason to keep the 8th over the pro other than future software updates? (the pro runs ipados 14)

The first pro will definitely get ipados 15 since even the mini 4 got ipados 14. At the rate Apple is going, my guess is that is will get a couple more. The 8th gen will definitely get many more. Having said that the 3GB may limit it at some point, or might even become the bottleneck that the 2GB are now (not in terms of speed but of reloads). Another big different is speakers. The 12.9 has the best speakers of any ipad, including the smaller pros...

The 1st gen 12.9 has 4GB RAM. The 8th generation iPad also lacks a laminated LCD, which to me is very important for viewing and the overall feel of the device. That being said, yes, the A12 is way faster than the A9X, but likely not for everything... I have a fifth generation iPad with the standard A9 and it is perfectly capable on iPadOS 14.

Sell both of them and get a 2nd gen pro, 12.9 if you want to draw. ;)

An iPad isn’t immediately useless even once Apple stop releasing software updates for it. Apps take about 2 years before you really have an issue with things no longer being compatible. 12.9 is too big for me, but in the OP’s case I’d be tempted to keep that one. Lack of storage on the 8th Gen could end up being an issue sooner than the lack of software updates, and there’s the money saved and bigger screen for pencil use and better speakers.

Unless it’s an Apple refurb, there is the lack of warranty to consider.

I’d go for the 8th gen. I have been more than happy with the features of the base model iPads. Currently using a 6th gen and it still does all I need including sketching and note taking with the 1st gen Apple Pencil!

I disagree with this: an iPad becomes vulnerable once it stops receiving security updates. A lot of App developers stop releasing App updates when Apple stops supporting the particular iOS E.G iOS 5

it has 3GB. By the way there is a nice video comparision on the subject....

Digital guy, thank you for your reply!

Question:

I have an older iPad here at the moment running iOS 12. Is it possible for me to check how much RAM it has? I know on websites it says it's got 1GB of RAM, but I can check it myself on the iPad?

How do these people know how much RAM iPad's have if the iPad itself doesn't display the amount of RAM and Apple doesn't display the amount of RAM on their iPad's either. I don't know why Apple doesn't RAM amount for iPad's because they do for Macs...???

Disagree with you. Security on Ipad is a non issue unless we are talking really ancient versions that are unusable anyway. And Apple requests developers to support the latest 3 OS updates, so currently they have to support IOS 12 and up. Ipad pro 1st will get IpadOS 15 100% (since even the mini 4 got 14) and probably even more (it has 4GB RAM), so it's good for another 5 years at least...

Yep. For the really, really bad security flaws, Apple tends to release an update for a couple generations of older firmware as well.
