My iPad Air 1 home just got stuck so that I doesn’t click anymore. If I press hard it still registers, but it barely moves. I’ve looked into local repairs in Oxford and am told that the whole screen needs to be replaced - is that really true?

Is there anything I need to think about with regard to non-Apple replcement parts? I would go with an Apple repair, but it’s just not worth it for such an old iPad..

Anyone with recommendations on where to get this repaired in the UK?

Thanks

Why don''t you use assistive touch? I never use the home button on any of my iPad's.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I've been doing that since it broke and it works really well. However, I'm thinking I want to give this iPad to my father who is elderly and who I think would find the physical button easier. And I will get a new one for myself.

I went thru the same exact thing with my iPad mini 2. Home button totally broken. Not covered anymore, and not worth it to fix, so I set up a “virtual” home button. Takes awhile to get used to, but works fine.

This is one of the reasons I am waiting for the next iPad pros. No more home button Yay! Seriously. Every iPad i’ve Ever owned has had issues with the home button eventually. That’s why I won’t even buy one of the current iPad pros...they still use a physical home button that clicks and is prone to breakage. Even the iPhones since the iPhone 6 got rid of the physical home button.

Anyway, until you get a new iPad, just set up a virtual home button in settings.

No, it's not true. You're probably dealing with a repair shop that only knows how to replace entire assemblies. Find another qualified repair shop.

The button can be replaced separately.

Thanks - that’s really helpful. I don’t want to replace the screen as I worry that whatever they replace it with will be bad quality. I’ll look elsewhere.

if I might add. iOS 12 is made to work with an iPad with no home button (just like iPhone X), so, if you upgrade, you'll see it's completely redundant. Still...I can see you probably want to give your dad a pristine iPad, and that's nice. Just wanted to add some more information for you to decide. =)
