Anyone upgrade from their Air 1 to the basic 2017 iPad? If you have, I'm curious as to your thoughts.

Apologies if there are duplicate threads. I didn't see any when I searched.

You can possibly keep your existing case, but in terms of performance it's going to be way faster.

The 2017 iPad is pretty much an upgraded iPad Air 1. Very nice performance bump and TouchID support is convenient. Battery life is also impressive.

Holy crap, the specs have been out for a while now, I think we can move past the disinformation campaign.

What disinformation campaign? Honestly, I find a lot of folks IRL who have asked me for advice appreciate the comparison - similar to an iPad Air 1 except better.

Chassis is very similar. So is display (not fully laminated). The new iPad is very similar to the iPad Air externally except it has TouchID support and no physical mute/rotation lock switch. Performance and internals, it's much faster and has excellent battery life. I actually highly recommend the 2017 iPad 9.7 for anyone on Air 1 or older, or as a first iPad.

Components shared with the iPad Air 1:
Screen, perhaps.

Components not shared with the iPad Air 1:
The rest.

It's not an upgraded iPad Air 1 any more than the iPhone 8 is an upgraded iPhone 7. Sure they're both products in a series, but they're materially different.
