iPad iPad Air 2 on iOS 9.3.5

I know it's not what you're asking, but for what it's worth, iOS 12 runs great on my iPad Air 2.
Some of the multi tasking features and the dock make it a good upgrade from iOS 9.

I didn't upgrade simply because I read it vastly incorporates iPhone X like features. Like swiping from top right to get control center. The other main reason is because I'll loose slide to unlock.
iOS 12.2 will make new again...faster and new modern features! Coming from a Mini 2 user!
But I loose slide to unlock and doesn't it get new iphone X gestures with ioS 12? I don't want that.
Yes it does! I own an iPhone X’s Max too as you can tell from my avatar below my name! You will love the new features even if are probably scare of changing your ways and scare of learning new features, it pretty easy to learn by trial and error. There are tons of YouTube! videos to help you get use to the new features too!

Read some of my posts in the iphone forum and you'll see how much I hate the X series. The iphone line dies with the 8 plus for me. The ipad probably with this Air 2. I was just curious if there were any other ways to resolve this out of the ordinary.
Well, if you want it to work properly, you’ll have to update it. Yes, you’ll have to make adjustments to how you use it, but these are easy adjustments. The gestures aren’t hard to do, and they work just fine. If you really don’t want to do that, your other option is to buy a tablet from someone else. Either way, you can’t really just stay in 2015 when it comes to tech. The app companies will eventually stop updating for that OS, or will make changes that will break things for you.
FWIW, I have an updated Air 2 and my husband has the Xs. I don’t find them at all similar just because they use the same gestures.
Other tablets like Andriod and Windows have much more extensive gesture and features then that of iOS offers. You would have a much steeper learning curve to overcome then that of iOS since you are already using iOS. You are quite stubborn! LOL! I bet that after a few weeks after you upgrade 12.2, you realized how silly you were!
When Apple makes a foolish move, like eliminating slide to unlock, I won't be one of the users who complains, then adapts, I'll refuse to upgrade and stand by that. Here I am 3 years later...
Slide to unlock isn't that great.
Slide to unlock is unnecessary, though. You have Touch ID which is better. Just press the home button down but keep your thumb on the button as the button comes up. Unlocks instantly.
I have a 9.7 iPad Pro (essentially an Air 2 with pencil support. The CPU and GPU are better but not enormously so) on iOS 9.3.4. YouTube works flawlessly and Safari does as well. I have no idea why that happens, I never experienced it.
I don't update for more or less the same reasons. Not only do I dislike the changes, but I refuse to lose performance or battery life.
Maybe you can try reinstalling YouTube and clearing Safari cache?

Still not sure why the same app works fine on the same software in 2015 and now in 2018 it doesn't.
Apps change to keep up with the iOS software updates.
Well these “developers” are the wrong ones because they stop supporting older versions. There is no valid reason why iOS 7 and beyond should still not be supported. I can somewhat understand 6 due to the design change.

I tend not to update apps either, because sometimes they change functionality I like or they make horrible design changes, unless I am sure I will like them.

You can always use older versions. In my opinion, it isn't a huge deal, barring apps that require to be updated, and if they don't support my iOS versions then I can't use them, but those apps tend to still support at least iOS 7, in my experience.
New apps are the issue.
Don’t update. I updated my iPad Air 2 from 9.2 to 12.1 and it destroyed my battery life.
There is obviously some things that go on in the background on the newer versions of iOS for them to be dropping support for the older versions? And for the battery life issues, have you tried a fresh instal? Made sure background app refresh was turned off as well? They have made some changes since iOS 9, including some more things happening behind the scenes. I have my 6s, 8 plus and my iPad all on iOS 12.1 and they all seem to have the same battery life as before. Better than iOS 11 for sure
If you update to iOS 12, there is an option under Settings -> General -> accessibility -> Home Button -> Rest Finger to Open. Enable that setting. It totally beats the moronic Slide to Open. With Touch ID, slide to open has become redundant.
You lose nothing by updating to iOS 12.
It would be as easy as you suggest if Apple allowed downgrading. As it doesn't, it shouldn't be taken lightly, as there is no way back, especially so if you really use your iPad.
Agree in theory but not in practice if slide to unlock is the main objection to upgrading.
