I have had my air 2 for just over 3 years and whilst it is fine for my needs, I am considering an upgrade in the next year therefore looking for advice as to what to go to. I don’t need the additional features of the pro series so the standard 9.7” seems to be the only option but is it much better than the air 2? It looks exactly the same and I’m not blown away by the processor so do wonder what sort of upgrade it would be.

Latest tech, faster, better battery etc., but I don’t think much else so think I’ve answered my own question really as the 2018 9.7 version looks exactly the same bar a slightly quicker processor.

There is no upgrade to the air 2 really u less you go pro. The budget ipads, whilst having faster processors, are thicker and heavier like the air 1.
This is what I thought. So essentially I’ll be getting something very similar, quicker but thicker?
Think I’ll stick with the air 2 until it dies.
Although the Gen 6 iPad is a huge value and the pencil support is nice, the non-bonded display made me cringe every time I touched it. I had a 10.5" Pro for two weeks and couldn't persuade myself that it was a worthwhile upgrade from the Air 2, which is still a great piece of hardware. This week I took a chance and bought an 11" Pro, not being sure whether I'd feel like it was worth the considerable cost. Within two days I was completely convinced.
I can think of cases where the Gen 6 would be a great purchase, but unless you absolutely need pencil support and need not to spend much money, I don't think the Gen 6 is an upgrade from an Air 2.

Yes, that's just about exactly right. Heavier, thicker, non-bonded display. Faster (so what?). Pencil support, though not quite as satisfying due to the non-bonded display. The Air 2 remains a fabulous iPad.
Good plan, wait and see what they do in March, no point for you to buy anything now if you don't want the pro.
Get a used 10.5 Pro with AppleCare. They are practically giving them away on the used market.

10.5 pro would be a great upgrade and they can be had for a fairly reasonable amount due to the holidays
OP, I’m in the same place except mine is now over 4 years old. The 2018 iPad is barely an upgrade, and the 2018 iPad Pro starts at $800 for 64 GB and WiFi only! I mostly use mine as a consumption device, so that’s way more than I want to pay.
A well-priced 10.5 is probably the way to go, if you’re set on upgrading, but I think I’m just going to keep using mine until it dies or Apple offers a compelling upgrade at a reasonable price.

I’m kind in the same situation with my iPad mini 4.
9.7’ looks like a downgrade in terms of screen and bezels so i just bought the 10.5’ model this week. I expect it to be better in every way except the design which is exactly the same as mini 4. But honestly i like it more than the news pro’s (the front). I like the white bezel so i’m basically just switching sizes, it’s the same color and everything
. The back of new iPads are sexy but I never ever saw the back of my iPad so...it’s not really important.

Same situation here. So sick of my Air 2 and have wanted to upgrade for a while. Want black bezels again.
-Not going from a former flagship product to something that isn't, and isn't even any better than what I already have, four years later.
-Not giving Apple $800 for another garbage bendy product when we all know they will suddenly "learn" something about chassis design next year and the current one becomes a black sheep with terrible resale that nobody wants. My Air 2 was curved out of the box, and so were the other four I tried - not doing that again. Probably why I hate my Air 2 so much.
-Not buying a 1.5 year old 10.5" iPad Pro at any price at this point, especially for more than the $500 you could've bought one for 6-12 months ago at Staples. Just bought a 3.5 year old new MBP because Apple can't get it together in that space, and I can only handle one old-ass legacy product at a time. Also not buying another chamfered edges product to stare at for the next 2-4 years like it's still 2012.

Me? Look at my sig, I haven't bought anything in recent years except iPhones, AirPods, and a launch day 10.5" iPad Pro for my wife.
The 2013 rMBP is my wife's, last one I bought was in 2008 which was replaced by AppleCare with the 2010.
Unlike a lot of people here, I vote with my wallet. Apple needs to get their **** together in a big way at this point in time.
