so i’ve had my ipad air 2 for almost 5 years now and it’s getting unbearable, the battery life is terrible and it crushes often so i’m looking to get a new one. I was thinking of getting the 8th generation iPad, is it worth it? i use it mainly for watching movies, shows and youtube videos, streaming music and playing games (i will also probably buy an apple pencil too since it’s supported)

Yes, the 8th generation iPad would suit your needs just fine.

Performance-wise, yep, it should be good. You do lose the laminated display, though.

Tip:
If you're not using the Apple Pencil for art and will just be using it for note taking and annotations, there are plenty of $20-30 clones available utilizing the same technology as the officially supported Logitech Crayon. These are just as accurate as the AP1, just missing features such as pressure sensitivity and tilt. Bonus, the Pencil clones also work on 2018/2020 iPad Pros and Air 4, they don't require pairing (you can use the same stylus on multiple iPads without missing a beat), and you don't have to plug in the clones to the iPad to charge (which just looks stupid and prone to accidents).

I came from the Air 2 and did not want to part with the laminated display after trying the lesser versions.

There are rumors of a new 9th Generation iPad based on the Air 3. If true, that would mean a thinner and lighter design and a (slightly larger) laminated display.

If you can hold out a while longer, this sounds like a very nice upgrade.

Then there is the Air 4 of course which is very nice but also more expensive. The Apple Pencil 2 is a great improvement over the first, as it charges magnetically rather than sticking out of the iPad.

I went from Air 2 to Pro 12.9”: another world, but I want to have a similar laptop replacement. For your purposes and if you want to keep it for 5 years or more, I thought that you can evaluate the Air 4.
