iPad Air 2019 External Storage on iPadOS 13

Hi, folks.
I want to buy an iPad as my next Apple device in addition to my MacBook.

I've watched the entire WWDC keynote and saw on YouTube how it's easy to connect external Storage to iPad Pro, but no mention of lat st Air. As i already have Macbook Pro it seems like a bit of overkill to buy iPad Pro. One question bothers me: would i be able to connect external drive through lightning? Is it capable to power my USB3.0 SSD?

Tell me if you already tried this, or you know it's possible or impossible.

You have to buy lightning to USB 3 adapter and see.
If there is not enough power you have to connect the adapter with power adapter of ipad too.
