Hey!

I received my Air 4 a few days ago and so far it hasn't been a good experience. I spent the last days thinking wether I should get it replaced because of some backlight bleeding. I decided to keep it for now, but just a few minutes ago I discovered that the screen is producing a clicking noise whenever I lift my palm from the center of the display. It's pretty annoying when using the Apple Pen. I applied a screen protector, but I doubt the adhesive of the protector is producing the sound, since it was freshly applied just a few days ago.

The spot is literally right in the middle of the display. It feels a bit like there's air under the screen when I press there. The display is also showing more severe "pressure discoloration" (idk what's the correct term, I mean this kind of flickering when you press on lcd screens) in that spot, than in other spots when applying the same amount of pressure. I was thinking maybe the display is bent, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It feels like if everything is laminated perfectly except for that one spot in the centre, where the screen doesn't seem to sit flush.

I will contact Apple tomorrow. Does anybody have an idea how common this issue is? My iPad was manufactured in the first week of december 2021, and it still has all these issues. Tbh I'm doubtful wether my replacement device will be better.
Also I'm wondering, are there separate replacement stocks for iPads? Mine took 4 weeks for delivery so I'm expecting I'll have to wait for a while. I got AppleCare+ though, so from my understanding I should be getting my new device before I send in the defect one? And do they give out new or refurbished devices?

Thank you!

I returned my air 4 for the display discolouration issue as well. Very light pressure on certain areas of the screen caused very bright discolouration on that spot. It also seemed to have touch sensitivity issues

I never end up getting it replaced because of stock issues. Decided to move up to a pro

Oh so the discolouration itself is considered a defect? But yeah it's definitely distracting when I write something in GoodNotes and in the middle the screen goes from white to black in one spot.

I have never thought about it and don't really know if the Pro would make sense for me, but maybe that'd be an option for me too, if things go wrong with my replacement device.

Normal light touches of the screen should not cause it to discolour. Only iPad I’ve had to ever do that.

For me, 64gb storage wasn’t going to be enough, and once you go up in storage, the price difference between the 256gb air and 128gb pro are very close.

I decided to splurge and get a 256gb Cellular M1 pro and have no regrets

Here’s a video of how it looks/sounds like. Sounds more dramatic in the video than it actually does, but you can hear the difference between the center and the rest of the display. I don’t have to apply a lot of pressure to produce the sounds.

update: Contacted Apple Support and I'm going to get a replacement device via express replacement programm. The assistant told me it would be delivered within 3-5 days (which I doubted since my original device took 4 weeks) but to my surprise it was shipped already! So here's hoping the next one will be better. :)

My iPad Air 10.5 had the same issue, but around the top near the FaceTime camera. Did a little bit of research, and it turns out it’s because air gaps can go unnoticed in the manufacturing of lcd displays, causing popping sounds and display pressure marks when there shouldn’t be any. Oled displays don’t seem to suffer from this issue though.
