Just received my first Apple product ever, Ipad Air 4 yesterday. Each time trying to install free app from Apple Store, it required me to key in password.

I google all solution and most of the solution is ask me to turn off "require password" for free download in "Media & Purchases" under our Apple ID. However refer to image file below, there is no such option to disable for Ipad Air 4 (IOS14.2).

I believe it is due to the option take away due to Touch ID or Face ID (for Pro version) that overwrite the whole OS setting. Anyway, I tried to reset all settings and not set any touch ID or passcode. The require password setting in "Media & Purchases" remained the same which you still can't disable the require password for free download.

Therefore, I think I have to live with it.

Hm, my iPads (regular iPad with Touch iD, iPP with Face ID) expect me to enter a password only in case the authentication (Touch ID/Face ID) does not work. Same for my iPhone.

Are you being asked to authenticate using Touch ID?

And to further elaborate there should be setting like Touch ID & Passcode. Check if iTunes and App store are enabled. If they are, you should be able to use TouchID to authenticate during such purchases. If you have not setup Touch ID however you would have to enter your password every time.

Setting up Touch ID and using your finger doesn't solve the problem?

That is normal, especially if you may not have been logged in before trying to make a purchase. Even with free apps, you have to enter your password. That is Apple’s security measure to make sure you are authorized on the account etc.

Dear All,

Yes I think I have to live with it. Just use touchID to download any app regardless free or not from Apple Store. I thought can differentiate the purchase app with passcode to prevent my kids accidentally buy it since their got their own touchIDs to access.

This is the Media & Purchases settings on iPhone 11 running iOS 14.3:

The settings are changeable whether Face ID for App Store is turned on or off. But on iPad Pro running iPad OS 14.3, the check box and radio button are missing, regardless of Face ID setting.

This is a bug in iPad OS. There is no logical reason why this setting should work differently on iPad compared to iPhone.

Well I think it is not only happened in iOS14 only. And Apple already stated in the Ipad Manual that is the way it should work.
