Everyone knows the iPad Air 4 is releasing sometime this month. Apple's education deal for college, "Buy a Mac or iPad for college. Get AirPods." ends October 12. My theory is that Apple will release the new iPad Air after October 12, so students can't buy the new iPad Air and take advantage of the deal.

What do people think? Makes perfect sense to me from a business perspective.

They had said prior that the Air 4 is excluded, IIRC.

Students (at least in Canada) are writing midterms in like two weeks... They've already bought whatever they need for the most part.

Most people never read the fine print. It only applies to eligible iPads and macs, and only iPad Pros were listed as “eligible”.

It quite literally says that on the fine print.

My thought is that since they aren’t in business to give products away such a promotion would be limited to products that when combined would not result in negative margin. The Air (whether 3 or 4) clearly does not fit the bill let alone any other cheaper iPad than a base pro.

The Air 3 was included in the AirPods back to school promotion, until it's removal from their website with the announcement of the Air 4.
At least it was in the UK.

I stand corrected. Didn't know that. How long do these promotions last anyway? Is the 4 just a victim of the timing of its availability with regards to the promotion and the typical timeframe that the promotion runs?

I don't think that the 4 was ever intended to be included in the promotion, even if the 3 was. They don't have to schedule the release of the 4 around it, just say that it's not eligible, that's all.

Well they don't have to do anything they don't want to do. I'm just speculating and adding the perspective that these promotions don't go on forever and so why bother including the Air 4 if the schedules don't align well, particularly since the delivery date on the Air 4 is still not solidified yet.

Again I don't know how these promotions typically work, I never bother with them because I never use these headphones whether they're Apple or Beats or whatever. I have no skin in the game one way or another personally, but I guess if it were available for the Air 4 I could purchase and give the headphones to a family member . . meh . .

Usually Apple doesn’t release a new product during the promotion, but it happened this year with the iMac, and the new model was included. I think that’s the rare exception.

The deal runs from 9th July in the UK to 29th October, maybe that end date is why the offer is being mentioned as unavailable.
If the free AirPods were included here it could possibly trigger complaints from the US where the offer ends next week.
