know the differences 60 fps vs 120 fps and touch id vs face id. but i preffer using iphone se with touch instead of iphoen Xs with face id. The reason the volume, for me is so big the Xs

the other difference is a14 vs a12z.

planning to upgrade my ipad (have ipad mini 2) which one would you recommend me and why.
Do you like the smaller form factor of the mini? If so, the upgrade path is obvious, the mini 6.

If you want a larger sized iPad, depends on the price. If the price difference is very slight, I would get the Pro. The quad speaker itself will deliver more enjoyment in you like consuming content. The A14 vs A12Z is moot as both are still overpowered for iPadOS. Only get the iPad Air if it's significantly cheaper.

If you’re planning to keep the iPad for up to 6-7 years, it would be worth getting a 2020 Pro with 6GB RAM or an Air 5 with 8GB RAM. If it’s more like 4 years, then either the 2018 Pro or Air 4 would be fine.

I have both and they are both excellent. However I prefer the 2018 iPad Pro 11 due to Promotion and the much better speakers. It really depends on price. The reason I have the Air 4 is that I had dropped my 11 Pro and cracked the screen and dented the frame. The cost to replace it at the time was within $50 of what I got the Air 4 for at the time. So for $50 more I decided to keep the 11 Pro cracked screen (put a glass protector over it to keep it from cracking more and also to make it a smooth service and it works perfectly) and add the Air 4. I forget the other options at the time, I think the refurb 11 Pro wasn't available and the 2020 iPad Pro 11 was still like $200 more than what I got the Air 4 for.

THank you for your opinions. Not plannign to use speakers in Ipad. Always be using headphones. Will try to get a 2020 ipad pro? Both ipad (ipad pro 2018 11 and ipad air 4) the price is 425. Another solution for 450 or least.

Hello, I have the same question as OP and was wondering what was your point of view on the longevity of the 2018 ipad pro. Like, is buying a 4 year old ipad in 2022 too risky?

Knowing that I can get it from apple refurbished store, would it be "worth" to sacrifice some years of longevity (hopefully not too much) for more features or to go get the air 5 (for me same price as 4) directly and keep it longer. I also don't see me taking all the advantage of the M1 (no heavy tasks like video or photo editing).

Thank you for your answer!

I'd expect 3-4 years useful life from the 2018 Pro, maybe 5 if you don't multitask or aren't bothered by frequent reloading.

Personally, I prefer M1+8GB for smoother operation (well, as smooth as possible with buggy iOS 15). However, it's not like older iPads are just suddenly going to drop dead or something.

How many years you expect to have ipad air 4 (2020)? i guess i preffer useful life than power. I may choose the the ipad 4 cause not doing heavy work and not working in painting (would choose for the 120fps)

3-5 years same as 2018 Pro. Maybe a year or so extra depending on how picky you are about performance.

I think both will be supported for at least 5 more years. While the Air 4 is ~2 years newer and does have a newer processor, it isn't necessarily faster. So unless Apple develops something that say requires an A14 feature that the A12X doesn't have I really don't see one lasting longer than the other. Just looking at Apple's history, the Air 2 which came out in 2014 is still supported although it may be the last year.

Supported yes but it doesn't guarantee a good experience. I'd probably tear my hair out if I was forced to downgrade to the Air 2.

True, although I really don't see the leaps in performance in the future that we saw from the Air 2 to now. But who knows - maybe Apple will surprise us and bring us some iPadOS functionality that pushes the envelope.

BTW - I still have an Air 2 in use. My friends daughter (7) uses it to play Apple Arcade games, watch YouTube for kids etc. when she comes over. It still does quite well if you don't need to push it. :)

I'd pick the iPad Pro (2018) even over the Air 5, yet along the Air 4.

why? develop your answer.
Promotion and four speakers. For me, it just enhances the over iPad experience. When you use your iPad as a multimedia device, you can definitely tell them apart.

Then again, I'm a Apple Pro type of person. I had the 2019 MacBook Pro but sold it for a 2021 MacBook Air. I was tired of the fan and heat. With my MBA, its quiet and cool.

I considered trading in my 12.9-inch (2018) for a 11-inch M1 (2021), but said no. Side by side, I didn't feel much of a difference in day to day performance. I'll see what the 2022 iPad brings.

I think the 2020 iPadPro is the best refurb to look at. Its extra RAM will increase its longevity. Its also guaranteed to get updates for one or two OS generations longer.

Are you into editing or gaming? Or just browsing the web and watching movies??!

A14 have much better CPU speed when it comes to launching app speed and similar to m1 thanks to it more efficient core clocked at higher scores. Obviously when you’re only doing emails, little editing, gaming without worrying the battery a14 is the way to go as it doesn’t heat as much as the older A12X/Z. A14 iPad Air 4/iPad 10 tends to have way battery life than A12X/A12z when it comes to gaming for longer period of time.

A12X on other hand is also better on editing, video rendering, playing serious heavy super games like COD, Genshin Impact, Mobile legends at sustained frame rates due to its more cores, powerful GPU video card... but the only problem with this one is the battery due to the fact that A12 is from half decade ago in 2018… although it heats up, but manageable and 10 times better performance and efficiency than the one in A10X.
