It depends on what your needs are. There are advantages of both OSes. Maybe the thing to do is make a list of how you would use each OS and decide if it can all be done on one or whether you need both.

This!

There are things the macOS does that the iPadOS just can’t do. So it really depends on what you’re going to use it for.

Id say that a MacBook and iPhone combination would be a better choice.
Odd statement... The three devices are not really comparable. For most people, one of iPad and MacBook might be sufficient. However they do serve different needs and purposes.

If you want hand-written note-taking, drawing/sketching, study for a course or do homework for that, an iPad with the right apps works much better. Also, for reading papers, books, news an iPad is superior to a MacBook.

For other media consumption, web-browsing its a tie (also dependent on if it’ll be used on a desk or sofa/bed). Same with light office stuff (a one-page letter every now and then)

If you need the full power of Microsoft office, have large folders and drives to navigate, do any programming/developing or need specialized software (i.e. scientists using MATLAB, Mathematica, Origin; video editors Premier), then you can not get aloNg without a MacBook.

I personally have both. Use the iPad much more often now, but having a Mac is still a must.

If you have the budget to buy both, it’s a good combo. You should also consider a MacBook Air+ iPad 8.

I bought a new MacBook Air in September and traded in my iPad Air 2 to get an additional $90 off. I almost immediately regretted trading in my iPad. So I purchased the new iPad Air 4 a few weeks ago and may end up selling my MacBook. I'm fine with using the iPad as my main computer and just don't see the need of having both. I find that I'm only turning my MacBook on two times a week max.

If you're just doing the usual browsing, email, netflix type stuff, they will probably duplicate each other in usage so you will find one or the other tends to go unused.

Tell us more about your current or future usage cases, I’m sure many of us could suggest you better ideas.
Like others, I’d say both have each pros and cons to consider based on certain usage cases.

If cost is an issue, I'd say make a choice.
But again, as others have said, it depends on what you do with them.

If price is not an issue, go for both.
