I got delivery of an iPad Air yesterday.I set it up manually. It called for creating a 6 digit passcode, which I did. This morning I rebooted it while trying the new shutdown procedure. When it restarted it presented a passcode screen to initiate touch ID. But the passcode screen was for only 4 digits, not 6. So there’s no way to input my passcode, hence I now have a brick. When I finally got through to Apple support the guy said, as expected, that must be an iPad OS problem. We tried a couple of work-arounds but no luck. The only thing left to do is connect the iPad to my PC and do a full reset. But there’s another problem. The only port on the iPad Air is a USB-C. My PC (and I bet most computers) is USB-A. So I had to go to BestBuy and buy a third party cable with USB-A on one end and USB-C on the other. Tomorrow I’ll try to get help with the reset. Not a good beginning. I do not recommend buying an iPad Air at this time.

I have two Gen 4 Airs in the house. I have neither seen nor heard of this problem on the forum. My daughter uses 6 digit Pin, wife 4 I believe, in addition to Touch ID.

It sounds like a background update may have occurred, or else some other unknown glitch. These things happen occasionally with all computing devices. A reset and backup restore (if you choose) isn't terrible and is actually fairly smooth.

Buying that cable is really a necessity, as it's always best to have direct iPad connectivity to iTunes on the PC for this and other eventualities. Backups, updates, and general synchronizations are also more reliable that way.

Allegedly there’s an Apple server issue affecting some people’s iPads after a restore or reboot. Putting it into recovery mode and wiping it out is pretty stress-free. You can google “put iPad into recovery mode” and follow the steps from there based on windows or Mac.
