For weeks I had been going back and forth and ended up leaning towards the Air here's why:

1. Lightning ecosystem - Currently the iPad Pro 9.7" is my SO's main computer and is soon to be demoted to Child No.1. Once my Air faces the same fate to Child No.2 it will be a lot less complicated to keep the cable clutter to Lightning only.

That's it. The iPad+lightning is the foothold Apple has in my household for the next 5 years. In the event that the iPhones move onto USB-C I may cringe a bit but probably those will be charged via Qi mat anyways.

Hey, whatever works best for you! I don’t see the next iPads introduce wireless charging, the battery just takes too long to charge fully that way.
It’s probably a good thing to have the more solid devices at home in case you pass them on to the kids.

External USB support on the Lightning iPads is real pain. Way easier on the 11".
