I am looking for a case/shell with a back and side protection without a cover (but perhaps one that allows me to use an Apple Smart Cover) with a large Lightning port opening - big enough to allow me to plug in Apple's 30-pin to Lightning adapter into it.

This requirement (along with no front cover) has eliminated every case/shell I have found. Is anyone aware of one?

Thanks!

Nice! Thanks for the recommendation. Does it appear to be sturdy enough to at least offer some level of drop protection?

I use this:
iPad Air 2 Case - Poetic iPad Air 2 Case [GraphGRIP Series] - [Lightweight] [GRIP] Protective Silicone Case for Apple iPad Air 2 Black (3 Year Manufacturer Warranty From Poetic) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NY66J66/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_sSDVub0MFNY0X

Protective but slim. Lip on the screen as well. Using it right now on my air 2.

That doesn't allow you to use a Smart Cover though.

Well I've obviously not had a chance to test it. It's made of polycarbonate so probably is as good as most other similar covers. To be honest I don't think there is anything out there that gives you really good drop protection except for maybe the tough cases but they aren't what you're asking for.
