Hey, friends,

Assuming Apple runs another back-to-school program this year, do you think the discount will apply to the purchase of an iPad? (That is, I'm planning on buying an MBP this summer. I don't particularly want a new iPod, but I'd be intrigued by the possibility to use that discount towards purchasing an iPad.)

What do you think? Anybody remember what they did for the first summer when the iPhone was around?

iPhone has never been eligible for student discount or BTS promo because Apple doesn't sell it, it's sold by operators e.g. AT&T. Hard to say with iPad because Apple sells it directly but it's not an iPod. Only time will show us but I doubt it

Thanks for the feedback! I figured we probably wouldn't get the chance to use the discount on an iPad this summer (if we ever are granted that), but I thought I should ask.

Now to go figure out which iPad to buy!

I actually asked this question about a month ago. I guess the short answer to your question is that the iPad won't be eligible. I was hoping that unlike the iPhone, since the iPad is a non-rev device (i.e. no monthly service plan, etc.), that it would qualify, but I guess the BTS specials are restricted to iPods only.

Apple normally runs the Back-to-School special either the 1st-2nd week of June through the 1st week of September, and it's normally to clear inventory because for the past several years Apple has had an iPod event during the 2nd week of September to introduce new iPods.

since the iPad will be released in under 3 weeks, Apple doesn't need to clear inventory any time soon. So I'm going to guess No, but I don't work for Apple, so I honestly don't know.

Also, Apple employees don't even get a discount on the iPhone itself, just the voice plan (not data)

There is no way to know, but it is always possible for Apple to throw school kids a break by knocking $100 or more off an iPad price with the purchase of a macbook, imac or mac pro. The last few years they've been giving away an 8gb iPod Touch ($199) with such a purchase.

Rumors are... well just that... rumors. No one can give specifics this early.

But I hope the rumor of continuing the iPod deal ($200) value with the purchase of a new mac with the ability of applying that discount to the price of an iPad will actually occur.
