Hey guys, I have a question about the iPad and HD movies. Specifically regarding the movies on iTunes. Will the iPad play the HD movies I buy from iTunes without a problem? Im guessing it should but I just wanted to make sure.
Also, would it even be worth it to watch them on the iPad in HD or just SD?

Yes per Apple specs it will play up to 720p HD video downscaled to the iPad's native resolution.

The iPad has no HD resolution, it uses 1024 x 768 (4:3).
HD footage starts at 1280 x 720 (720p), so any HD movie you watch on that device will be downscaled.

SD has a resolution of 720/768 x 576 (PAL) or 640/720 x 480 (NTSC).

So it's your decision if you want your movies scaled up or scaled down.

Does the iPad have an HD screen?

yup it will play them just fine :D

from apple...

H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

see.. no limit on video bitrate! anything under 720p will play fine :D (within limits of course).

edit: ARGH why do people always beat me!

Ah good to hear. I guess ill stick with SD since most of my purchases are SD anyway. Thank you all for your quick replies!

no probs. how much more are the HD movies? (never bought them before).

Well, the few ive bought are only a buck more. Hehe, yea I know its not a big difference but those few bucks add up. Id like to buy the HD movies on disk anyway.

true that. cant blame you really, thats a free SD movie for every few SD movies.

lately i have just been hiring BDs from the video store and ripping them with my PS3 into uncompressed .mkvs (did i just say that  ;))

Well, I have ripped movies but I saw how nice the movies purchased from iTunes looked on the iPad( The art work, chapters, synopsis, etc.) that I wanted to have a small collection of those so they'd look good on my new iPad.

Besides, im not buying the real expensive ones anyway. I go for the movies I like that I can find cheap just to experiment. For the real good movies I go elsewhere. :)

thats a fair call and probably a very good idea. probably worth the investment rather then wasting time doing it all yourself haha.

In the UK, you can only get HD movies on Apple TV, not off a computer. Will this change with the iPad do you think?

Also, even if there is no iBook Store, will the UK still get the app so we can provide our own .epub books?
