iPad and iMac... Share your experience.

I would like to know, those of you thAt have an iMac iPad combo, how it works out for you..
Whether work or college or wtvr your situation I would like to know how you use them together and if u would rather have a different setup( just a MBP).

And if you would suggest it to me, a college commuter.

I use my Mac when I'm at my desk, I use my iPad when I'm not.

And that's about the full summation of it, really.

Imac serves as a central dump station for our Iphones, Ipads and macbook.

Imac also used to convert dvds, make photo albums and sync our appleTVs.

Imac is also used for most video chats between kids and grandparents, however on occasion we have hooked the macbook up to the TV for a larger screen! (did this to facilitate a baby shower between TX and Paris, France)

The Ipads are used anywhere other then at the Imac desk. In fact the Ipads have effectively taken the place of our Macbook as it now sits dormant most of the time.

Ipads go everywhere with us and are used for work, personal, babysitting and showing off.

I'm a graphic designer and web developer. I have an iMac 24" and an iPad 3G 32GB.

Before the iPad, the iMac was always ON.

Now I turn on the iMac only if I have to work or download something huge. If not, I use the iPad.

I'm really waiting for a more powerful iPad — second or third gen.

I've blogged a couple of thoughts about it today, especially about the part whether an iPad can replace a notebook or not. As always, it depends on your individual needs and use case. But in general I don't think that either iOS nor the iPad itself are YET up to the task. Give it a few more iterations and we'll talk again.

BTW, I'm actually typing this on my new iPad and am very slowly getting used the keyboard. I really miss the cursor keys. And umlauts (I'm a native German speaker).

i am a charter pilot who purchased an ipad for the aviation apps that are available and it has made traveling a breeze! i stopped carrying my laptop around, and recently acquired a 24 iMac off a buddy. I loved the combo so much that i gave my laptop to my little brother who is entering college.

I was never taking my macbook with me any more as i traveled, since i basically just needed the internet, and movies, all of those needs were taken care of with the ipad 3g 32gb.

Re: typing umlaut characters on the iPad (or iPhone too) - there is a way!

Just a press and hold down the appropriate letter for a couple seconds, and a popup will appear with special/accented characters, such as é ë ė ê ö ō ä and others (just typed those on my iPad now...)

same thing for capital letters, just hit shift, then press and hold the letter ÄÖËÜ

I don't speak or read/write German but are those what you're looking for?

I'm a teacher with both an iMac and an iPad. I use my iMac for when I really need to work, mostly creating documents, lesson plans, etc. I use my iPad for fun mostly - web, email, reading ebooks, etc. It's nice that I can put PDFs on my iPad that are work related to read at my leisure. I don't honestly do a lot of real work on the iPad, but I do love it!

I have an iPad and an iPhone 4.. I'll be getting a new computer in a week.

It's either mbp 15" and iPad
iMac 27" and iPad..

Or sell the iPad and just get a MacBook air.
Honestly I don't need a computer for much but school work

Any thoughts?

My vote is to go for the iMac. More bang for your buck and you already have a portable device for the inbetweens.

iMac is used for downloading, main hub for all my music, mixing on traktor dj, loading photos to iPhoto, base station with my HD EXT for Air Video. And Warcraft also as a general workhorse and skype video conference system

iPad is used to read comics, watch films whilst trashed on the sofa after the wife and child are in bed, as a means to keep my son quiet also to keep the wife quiet whilst said Warcraft sessions are happening.

I use it at work for quick net access to help kids in class as our school co putters are at best awful and at worst unusable.

For sharing music suggestions with fellow dj's, keeping track of the forum I manage, reading books... Lots of books.

And for sitting in coffee shops when i manage to escape into town, where I just flump into a big sofa and soak up the feeling of owning my iPad.
