By the looks of it, it simply shows the newspaper's web interface. The alternative would have to be the free application safari. You can bookmark sites or add them to your home screen and does pretty much the same thing. It even has a built-in search to find newspapers! It's called google.

I remember seeing some kind of concept for a newspaper store or something but then that depends on the app devs who would rather charge and use their own app.

The user experience is much better in their own apps anyway.
 
I see your point. But it very boring open safari, googling and save bookmarks ... I need to look at a lot of newspapers of several countries for my job. I would like to have an ad-hoc app.
 
Thanks guys for the suggestions. In the end I decided to spend one precious dollar to buy WPapers: it seems the most complete if compared to other similar apps. I have to say it quite fast in finding newspapers and very handy. Nice app ...
