iPad and Polarized Sunglases

I've noticed something weird in here. When i put my sunglases on, iPad screen becomes extremely dark sometimes, not always. Yet, it becomes worse when i look it from different angles. Adjusting brightness doesn't change anything.

It might be because of IPS technology. Because, my iPhone looks pretty normal while my glasses on. Or, because of the reflections around?

Does anyone else has noticed it before?

If it is not consistent, likely not a a screen issue.

Or, because of the reflections around?

Lolwut? This is a common side effect of looking at pretty much ALL lcd displays (not limited to LCD type, IPS/TN/MVA/PVA, etc) through Polarized sunglasses. I have this problem everyday with my sunglasses.

Light coming from LCD is polarized. While wearing your sunglasses, rotate the screen. You will find an angle where the screen will be black and 90 degrees to that, the light from the LCD will now be parallel and the screen will appear (though slightly dimmed).

Noticed this over the weekend. I was in my car (parked of course) and goofing around with the iPad. Looking directly at it with polarized glasses, I couldn't see a thing. Took off the sunglasses and the screen with visible again.

No biggie for me since I hardly use my iPad in direct sunlight but interesting.

Polarized sunglasses do have an effect and if you have never worn them it is hard to understand. I wouldn't describe it as "darker" but I can't really describe it either.

Turn it to landscape mode.

This in an oversight on Apples part. On the first gen iPhone the angle of the polarization was incorrect so when you looked at it in landscape, you were seeing some of the darkening effect. On the next two models this was fixed so that the angle was in between portrait and landscape. On the iPad it's on the portrait. I'm going to guess this will be addressed in the second version.

You cannot wear polarized lenses and looks at a screen. I get the same thing with all my devices.. That's why pilots are not allowed to wear them
