I'm in the process of backing up and old laptop before getting rid of it and I've come across and old iPhoto catalog and an Aperture library. These are old photos I don't want to get rid of but I also don't need then at my fingertips. Mainly as we are talking about half a TB of photos. A lot of these are 20+ years old so it's not exactly the stuff you look at very often.

I now use an iPad mainly so I can connect usbc storage but I'm still not sure what to do with these old libraries. Can I convert them to something new? Are there any apps out there that can open these libraries if I offload them to an external drive?

If you can live without the edits and processing on the images, then you can navigate into the library directory (windows) or right click on it and then Show Package contents on Mac.

Find the Masters directory - in there you will find all of the original image files. You can copy that to a pair of external drives (one plus one for backup).

Have a check in the Masters directory to make sure they are all there and that the library wasn’t referencing the images in another location.

Thank you for that. The Aperture masters folder is neatly organised by import date whereas iPhoto is just one big mess. At least I have my photos :)

The only real option is exporting them from aperture as jpgs or suchlike. You won’t be able to access the edits but it sounds like that isn’t necessary anyway.

I’m assuming the laptop is a Mac. If you don’t have the app, it’s still available for download from Apple. Import iPhoto library. Good time to clean up maybe? Export and bake in edits.
