iPad arrived but I'm a bit disappointed

After 10 days of excitement it has finally arrived :D

Synced it all up then decided to have a play. I am disappointed by the screen. Everything looks as if it is not a native resolution even the iPad specific apps.

Have I got a dud or are they all like this? The lettering just doesn't seem sharp at all :(
 
mine looks gorgeous ... though this is not a 3.5inch phone... you shouldn't be getting extremely close to the screen anyways...

do you get that close to your desktop monitor ?

At normal viewing distance, everything looks sharp as a ...... :D
 
You must have something wrong or are not using the correct settings or try some HD programs. I love mine clear as bell!
 
You've all got me worried now.

I have the iPad on my lap so I'm not too close to the screen.

I'll check out my workmates iPads tomorrow to see if it's faulty.
 
Ever since I got the iPhone 4 the screen does look a little blurry. However, the size of the screen makes up for that IMO. There are things you can do on the iPad that just aren't practical on an iPhone. Games, movies and web surfing are much better.

That being said, I'm looking forward to an updated iPad with a higher screen resolution.

Sounds like you loaded your iPhone apps into it...while they work the resolution is not great at 2x size. My iPad has been amazing....game changer for sure.
 
Take a picture of the screen and show us what you mean. iPhone specific apps will not look good, but iPad apps should look great.
 
I would take a screenshot but my Wife has pinched it as I'm working from home.

She has used it more than me :(

As people have said, iPhone apps really don't look good in the 2x / pixel-doubled mode. Native Apps look much better although not up to the very high standards of the iPhone 4. How does Safari and Mail look?

Safari & Mail again look jagged. It's probably me just being picky.

My Wife did say when I ordered one can we get two :rolleyes:
 
My screen looks awesome as long as I am using the ipad apps. I got mine last week and have read 3 ebooks on it and watched a few movies and think the screen is gorgeous.

The ipod/iphone apps do look like *****.

Part of that has to do with pixel density. The size of the display did not increase along with the resolution compared to earlier iPod Touch and iPhone displays. The iPad's 9.7" screen with 1024x768 pixels has a pixel density of 132 ppi (pixels per inch). The older handsets used a 3.5" 320x480 display with 163 ppi; the new iPhone, if you recall, has 326 ppi. The lower the density, the larger the pixels hence the blockier effect. Pixel doubling essentially halves the density again which is why 2X scaled iPhone apps look so junky on the iPad.

Keep in mind, the iPad still has greater pixel density than any MacBook Pro or iMac display to date.
 
I got mine today and I've been using it about an hour and I love it! The typing is taking some getting used to but I guess it'll get better with practice! The screen is amazing just the right size and I think the clarity is fine. I saw the iPhone screen today too but I wasn't that impressed - it's nice but I don't think it's worth paying another £500 out for.
 
I have the experience with the others in that the screen is one of the iPad's strong points. The only thing I have seen on it that doesn't look good are some upscaled apps.

Let me guess, you are a PC user.

Ever heard of anti-aliasing? People on PCs pay hundreds of dollars for a video card to get good anti-aliasing.

Anti-aliasing is built into Mac OS / iOS, so sounds like you are not used to the high quality font rendering.

Wrong, I am an Apple Fanboy of many years :D. Typing this on my Macbook Pro with HP LP2475w screen. I do know were you are coming from though.

I'm also not talking about the iphone native apps as I know these look awful at x2.

I'll know better tomorrow when I compare mine at work.

What on earth as you talking about?

Sounds like you are totally getting Anti-Aliasing as used in 3D games to smooth out Jaggies in games and typeface smoothing (which you can't do on the iPad) totally mixed up.
 
No typeface smoothing on ipad? I doubt that- they all look smoothly aliased to me. Definitely no Anti-aliasing in games yet though- roll on iOS4 (iPad edition).

I love my iPad! It's wonderful for traveling. But I know what you mean about the words not seeming "sharp." It's not the iPad's problem. You're probably just downloading applications that are iPhone specific. They are stretched to fit the iPad's screen, & things are looking as sharp. Hope that helps!
 
I would reccamend comparing your iPad display with another persons iPad display.

I see you specifically mention native apps and you should be seeing a Great display for them!

Something does not sound right. If you can't compare your display for another, then I would exchange it!

One of the strongest points of the iPad is it's incredible display!

No, you can't do it.

It only works on desktop monitors as the sub pixels are in one direction (horizontal)

Due to the fact the iPad can work either way it can't be done apparently.
