other than pocketable size of an iphone and single hand use, how much do you think a new ipad (2021 models i.e the cellular ones) can be replaced as an iphone? are the camera sensors same between iphone and ipad?

I think the new phones have larger sensors. I think there are a number of differences between how the cameras work on the different devices. I have a 2021 12.9 Pro and an iPhone 12 Pro Max and one very significant difference is the phone supports ProRAW and the iPad does not. Also, the 12 Pro Max does image stabilization by shifting the sensor itself, not the optics.

Here are some good discussions on the cameras in both -

For me it came down to when I'm out on trips, hiking on trails, and doing business trips. An iPhone is far more convenient in these situations - this didn't stop me from taking my iPad as a reading/watching device in many of these situations.

Not sure how CarPlay works with iPads ... or if it does at all?

iPhone has the telephoto lens - I end up using this a lot when I'm out and about. The macro abilities on the iPad are far better tho.

As hard as I've tried, I cannot get the iPhone to replace the iPad (reading on an 11' iPad is heaven). I would love 1 device fits all but I've resigned to the fact that this is just not possible today.

In terms of camera comparison between the iPhone and iPad, the iPhone camera tech has always been superior to the iPad. I believe Apple tends to be a generation or two behind in regards to camera tech for the iPad, for example.. 2021 iPP is comparable to the iPhone 11. But not quite as good as the iPhone 11, since it has two 12MP cameras compared to 12MP and 10MP in the iPad Pro.

But I basically use my iPad as an iPhone… it being cellular, gives me the advantage of always being connected. However, my iPad serves as a laptop replacement as well. i tend to do quite a bit of task with my iPP. That’s why the iPad is invaluable to me with the roles I’ve given it.
