I have been thinking, and I was wondering if there is any chance Apple will give away iPads this year in their back to school promotion. I know it seems farfetched, but it seems Apple could really profit from this. It is clear they want to target College students because they want to sell textbooks and other books. This seems like a great way to get iPads out there so people will buy the textbooks, boosting Apple's sales. Thoughts?

Not a chance. Usually that promo is geared towards getting rid of stock.

Give away iPads?
Not happening
Period

But the iTouch giveaway has been a huge success and Apple knows this. I been to many college campuses and invariably everyone has either a Touch or an iPhone sitting next to their Macbook. Heck, even the profs have touches instead of blackberries or WinMo phones.

I expect given Apples "flexible pricing announcement" to see 10-25% off the iPad for back-to-school either this year or starting next year. I suspect this year, since I think apple wants a strong roll our of the iPad, in contrast to the iPhone where the platform was not mature and they essentially did a soft roll out of iPhones (iPhone didn't take off until the 3G and the SDK came out and they went worldwide).

I think you know Apple will not be giving away iPads this summer. It's a brand new product and it is $499. That's a tremendous amount to give away for free. An education discount would be great, though.

sounds like a hell of an idea, but it wouldnt happen until next year when the new ipad is ready for launch. and im thinking it would be an iTouch or that amount towards the purchase of a new ipad. It would make perfect sense to get these in the hands of kids in school that have money going to textbooks anyway

Sometimes I read these threads and just shake my head in wonderment. I guess some people who post these things are pretty young, and not really "wise to the world"? That's all I can muster.

Giving away iPads in hope of selling eBooks makes about as much sense as Exxon giving away cars so people will buy gas.

Every time Apple has had this promotion it was used to clear out stock right before new iPods came out. So I doubt are not going to do it so soon after the release of the iPad. It sure would be nice though!

The iBookstore, much like the iTunes store and App store is a vehicle to sell more iPads. Apple only does a little better than break even on these stores, and the point of them is to give people more incentive to buy into the i-platform.

Apple has said many times, they are a hardware company, and that is where they want to make their money.

Why would they give a away a device they spent a lot of $$ developing and marketing.

They use the iPod to drive laptop sales for students, I don't see apple trying to give away one of their new flagship products to get someone to buy a laptop.

Wow, this is one of the funniest threads I've read in awhile. The OP is naive about Apple at best. You do know that the iPod Touches that they "give away" cost only $199? MAYBE they will give $200 credit towards iPad.

I'm hoping when it comes out that there is a $30-50 student discount. But that seems unlikely. I emailed Steve Jobs about it. Haven't heard back. Oh well, I guess I'm 1 for 2. The iPad could use a little nudge to get college students on board.

That's true. But I don't think it's unreasonable to think that by late summer, Apple may be ready to clear out the early versions of the device (and maybe eliminate the 16GB model) to make way for a holiday-season release of new iPads that include, say, a camera and some other new features.

They wouldn't give away a $500 device, but they may well offer some kind of super bundled deal involving the purchase of a new Mac.

This is what I was thinking, but not until the fall of 2011.

You emailed Steve Jobs about it? Why?

Doesn't seem like a good use of that email address.....

No, they won't. For reals.

Nothing says "our brand new device isn't worth what we're charging for it" like giving it (or part of it) away just after it comes out.....

did you realize they release a new one right after?

lol.. why would they give them away for free? no way..
although a "buy a mbp, get 50 dollars off ipad" kind of deal could be possible no?
