Can I replace my old aging SLOW windows laptop with an Ipad and use the Ipad as the base/back-up for the Iphone?

No, you will still need a computer for syncing and storing your mail data etc. Just like an iPhone or iPod, the iPad will need to connect to a computer to get music and other media onto it. I would recommend a iPad/iMac solution. Get a low end maybe even refurbished iMac and use the iPad as your portable solution. The iMac will offer you greater storage as well as opportunity for an always connected external storage solution for your expanding media needs, while the iPad will fill your email, surfing and mobile needs that demand a larger screen than your iPhone.

My vote is to get a refurbished machine. It is a nice way to save some money, and the machines do come looking brand new and with a full warranty.

Keep an eye on the refurb store, you will find last generation 20" iMacs as low as $849 or $899 but the best bang for buck is usually a 24" for about $999-$1,149.
