iPad as portfolio?

Hello all I'm a graphic designer and am strongly considering using the iPad has a digital portfolio to bring with me to interviews/client meetings. I would also bring my binder but thought the iPad is a great tool for this. Does anyone currently use it for this and what are your thoughts on the display and performance of just basically setting up an album and putting my work in there?

Do you have a Mac? The iPad can't currently create albums on its own; you have to do so in iPhoto.

Having said that, other apps may include a slide show feature and you may be able to import your images into them independently. (For instance, Goodreader will do this... though perhaps not as slickly as you'd like.)

The display is wonderfully clear and bright, really impressive IPS tech. Some may be distracted by the glossy screen.

Dead bang simple... Looks great. Easy to load in work too... I usually just email screenshots to myself, save the images to the Photos app, and bingo.
Little annoyances abound, such as the ability to really control the albums and move stuff around... But that can be fixed by creating and album in iPhoto or Aperture and syncing it that way. I use Skitch for screenshots, which I love.

Also, you can use the Dropbox app and store PDFs of multipage projects, etc.

Screen looks GREAT. Photos look great. It is impressive, although you still get some "can I play with it"' which is no big deal. Much better than schlepping books and bringing a stack of printed pieces, IMO.

I'm a photographer, and bought an iPad last week. 16gig (not going to fill it up with films or music) and 3G (it's good to be online when I'm away from home). I had three main reasons for choosing iPod: as a portfolio for my pix, for delivering tutorials during the photo workshops I run, and for writing. In terms of productivity, I reckon it will have paid for itself by the end of July...

People love looking at pix on the iPad (though maybe it's the iPad they're more interested in...). Instead of me showing pix to them, they can hold the ipad and scroll through the pix at their pace.

I wouldn't do any photo editing on the iPad, and only note-taking till I get an external keyboard. Nevertheless, it's becoming part of my creative life...
 
That's a really good idea! I hadn't considered that. I wonder if anyone has written an app yet specifically to do this? Could be a nice simple one to write. Anyway, smart idea, it's something I could use it for too.
 
if you want potential employers to say, 'wow - he has an ipad, he must be the shiz'! - then do it.
 
I know it is hardly the same league at all but I use my iPad to show friends and family my personal photo's, the short videos I make (for fun and my awful website!) and also use pages to show and read the short stories that I write.

Never really had any problems and it sure beats lugging a laptop or trying to use the smaller screen of the iPhone.
 
If I can find one I will most likely purchase one soon. Thanks for the input.
 
Awesome idea.

I would want something a little more professional than just opening things in the Photo app, though.
 
I was going to explore making my ipad portfolio once I've finished up my website.

Only thing I've been trying to figure out is, since I do both web design and video production, what would the best way to be to display both of those things? I dont really like the idea of using the photo/video app and having to switch between them.

Anyone know if it would be possible to make a 'saved webpage' and make everything local links on the device itself? Possibly using goodreader, or something? i havent looked into it yet.

I'm a web designer and I do just that with goodreader! I drop all of the files into a folder as if they where on my desktop and all the relative links work perfectly.

Im still waiting for an app that can host a virtual server for demo'ing db driven websites, but I think I'll be waiting a long time for that so have to rely on good 3G or Wifi connectivity when I'm out visiting clients.
 
I use mine for a digi portfolio HOWEVER its not as good as PRINTS....

The ipad doesnt colour manage... so colours look completely different on an iPad screen compared to most other devices or prints. (If you are a real perfectionist and serious about your art like I am then you will notice this)

Its still a fantastic thing to take around as a portfolio though... but again prints are just superior in every way.

Yea if I was a print designer the iPad might not be the best choice... But since with web design everyone is viewing your work on different monitors, checking them on an iPad isn't any worse :)

ThomRimmer - thanks for confirming my initial thoughts about using an app such as goodreader to view the files locally!
 
I think it can work well. I plan on using mine for this purpose.

Just make sure your work is more impressive than the ipad! :p otherwise the only thing people are you to remember is the ipad and not your work.
