iPad at 35,000 ft. - inflight entertainment device

Seriously.
This sounds like a cheap way to get in-flight entertainment for airlines. Airlines would probably charge a rental fee, and they could develop apps that provide information customized to the flight. (Maybe movies themed to the flight's destination or some sort of tourist's preview of the destination.) Sounds good to me.

i'm with ya, i prefer my own, but it's nice for ppl without ipads to be entertained in flight and great for the airlines since they don't have to be stuck with several years old IFE systems since they can update ipads as quickly as they want.
I fly for pleasure every weekend and use the Gogo inflight. Delta used to offer it for free when the flights were delayed, but they don't do so any longer (as far as I've seen). I'm not quite understanding how this Bluebox will work
Edit, nevermind, I didn't even see that it was an iPad rental service. Hmm. If the current cost of paying for movies/games on the back of the head rest is any indicator, this will be costly!

I'm willing to wager that there are more than a few people that wished they had the financial wherewithal and/or schedule to do this every weekend. It would be a great way to enjoy a movie or two.
Myself, I have mixed feelings about it. Flying still conveys that "Calgon, take me away!" feeling of escapism to me. I don't mind the occasional turbulence, as I like rollercoasters and thrill rides, and I have no problem with being next to large people if necessary. Still, the process of checking bags and going through security (especially with a laptop or iPad) seems a bit of a hassle, as well as long waits at the terminal and the occasional delayed departures.
If you don't mind my asking, how do you streamline your air travel? Do you just use one small carry-on and "wing it", so to speak?
I travel for a living, so I'm on an airplane minimum 2-3 times a week, usually more. I'm almost at a million actual flight miles just on Delta alone. I carry a backpack with my MBP and iPad in it plus my paperwork and snacks. Then a small rolling suitcase that I can carry onboard with all my clothes. I have only checked a suitcase once while flying for business in 12 years, and that was when I had to spend a month at the Olympics this year. I don't trust the airlines to get my bag there, and I hate standing around waiting for a checked bag.

My wife is the queen of traveling light. Whenever we travel, regardless of duration, we can easily get by with one rollaboard per person and one carry-on backpack/bag.
Apple's patent filing recently depicting a 'locale' based application that can show up when you are near/at a business or place could come in handy.
Their example is at a public library, where the catalog application could be authorized to show up on your device when you are there for book research/lookup/reservations, and disappear when you leave.
That would be awesome for a flight, if you get to the airport and it gives you inflight entertainment. Although with an iPhone/iPad I hardly think I'd be pressed to pay for entertainment unless it was something specific that I couldn't already have loaded on the device.

Well, my mom is the opposite.... she'll take a steamer trunk and 3 auxiliary bags for an overnight trip. So I guess it all averages out.
It's less "Calgon" and more long distance boyfriend, unfortunately.
I pack one small wheeled carry on. The iPad stays in my purse and I've not had to take it out at TSA yet. Security is not too bad for me anyway since I fly mid size airports. Though I find myself delayed quite often
