Generally when I get a new phone or similar battery driven device, I expect to be able to do some basic setup, but that I must then give it a full battery charge before doing any real 'work' on it. But with my iPad (3g) I really want to use it the second I have it. I've already picked up some apps, so once I sync I'll be ready to go.

...but will the battery be ready?

The vignette that they ran at the keynote talked about "open the box and it just turns on". Well, they didn't mention needing to sync it with iTunes, and I'm wondering if they also didn't mention needed to give it a good charge.

Can someone who bought a wifi speak to this?

Thanks,
B

My wifi was fully charged out of the box, and took over 10 hours of use before I had to charge. I was shocked it really lasted that long. 3G will be a little less obviously, but it will be hours before you have to charge. Good luck, you are gonna love it!

Mine came with the battery 100% charged. I opened it up, used it at the apple store, and walked around the mall all day using it, and then even the maps for the trip home (since I don't really have an apple store nearby), and of CORSE used it all night when I got home, and literally fell asleep with it on my lap, on the couch.. Sorry for the long story, but to sum it up, straight from the box, it lasted longer than I did. :D

hope yours does the same. :)

I'm pretty sure, based on the battery charge status that users are reporting at the time of purchase, that the iPad ships fully charged.

My assumption would be that if this is the case then there is no need to drain the battery first or fully charge it, as ( if this process was even necessary ) it has already been done by apple before it shipped.

Regardless of how charged it is when it arrives you can use it while it charges.

Thanks for the replies guys. Encouraging news.

Now I just need to endure another 8 days of waiting. /sigh

As mentioned wifi had a full battery, which was quite surprising to be honest. I hope 3G is the same. :)

Mine fired right up at 100% life and took 10+ hours until I recharged it. Your good to go once you sync it with iTunes. I preinstalled everything prior to getting my iPad so everything was a breeze

Mine had 100% charge when opened, after it was bought from the store, packaged, shipped. So about 3-4 days in sleep mode.

Mine came with around 90% charge. I have been using it non stop since then and have come down to 70%. Not too bad.
