Thinking about the future. Do you need the Applecare to get the $99 replacement Ipad if your battery dies let's say in about 18 months?

AppleCare does not cover batteries that die under normal use. The only way it will replace your battery is if it's defective. $99 battery replacement is available to all iPad owners at any time.

How so? Several months ago I had a phone swap done by Apple on an original iPhone for diminished battery capacity under AppleCare. Obviously that was an old phone and a battery with a lot of use. They didn't question it at all.
