iPad iPad black Smart Cover more like gray?

That is so odd. Mine is definitely gray. The package says black but I have an older black Smart Cover and the contrast is striking.
Meh. Going back to the Apple Store today. I'm getting a red one. Unless it looks like pink. I'm not a pink kinda guy.
It's definitely gray. I bought a black one from Apple.com with my launch day air 2 and it's gray. The black one I got from staples for $20 is black like the mbp keyboard (I'm assuming this is the older model). I honestly like the deeper black.
The one you got from Staples, is it the new polyurethane or the older leather? I think the older leather cover is black black, the newer poly is gray. The mganets on my old leather cover are not holding the cover in place too well, so I needed a new one. I would have preferred black, but went with Red. Sticks on good, but its a bit too flashy for my taste.
Pretty sure it's poly. It's smooth to the touch. The deep black one from staples jumped back to $39 a few hours after I ordered though I think.
Went to Staples and found them for $20. Bought black, yellow and red. My wife has yellow. Hearing over to return the covers to the Apple Store. $40 for those covers is not chreap. 50% discount cNt be passed up!

I think that the Smart Covers made for the original Air were modeled after last years iPhone case colors, while this years iPad Air Smart Covers are being colored to match this years iPhone cases (silicone).
But the Air 1 and Air 2 Smart Covers are compatible so it's a thing of color.
I have heard that the hinge on the Air 1 Smart Cover is a bit bigger than the new ones.

Thanks. Is there a different model number on last years black cover versus this years slightly lighter black cover?
I want to order one online but can't tell the difference.

So I'm clear, you wrote "gray" but what you mean is "this year's black which actually looks more like grey", correct?

DEF not black. Got a Mini w/ a black cover, the Air 2 cover I ordered at the same time as the device, directly from apple, is definitely grey. Not even a discussion. LOL. Mine look like the pic above.
