My first book will be Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin not just because it is a good book but because it is heavy (3 lbs.) and the print is small. I have arthritis in my hands and I can hardly hold the book, lol. I guess it's my test case.

Read books by Vince Flynn. One of his books will soon become a major motion picture. Espionage

The two fattest books I can think of, which are Tolstoy's War and Peace, and A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. They both weigh in at around 1500 pages, and last time I read War and Peace, my hardcover just about broke my wrists. (At least The Lord of the Rings is available in three volumes.)

I want to re-read both, and figure that if I am going to try out this e-book thing, I might as well give the iPad a serious work-out. If it can cope with those two, it can cope with anything.

I imagine it will be one of the first things available. There are already any number of electronic bibles out there. It's the sort of thing that lends itself to e-publishing, because of the usefulness of being able to search through it. Then there are all sorts of interesting options for pop-up notes and commentaries; clicking a phrase and bringing up the original Hebrew and Greek (if you are enough of a scholar to read them, which I certainly am not).

There'll be an early deluge of stuff that is out of copyright too, many of them probably in really awful editions. A lot of the "classic literature" on the App Store at the moment is really scary stuff produced by obscure people in Vietnam with pirated copies of the Penguin Classics or Oxford University Press covers. Don't know how they get away with it, to be frank. Stealing someone's cover design is theft, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have just scanned the contents as well.

Legal Treatises

I wish they had an epub version of the tax treatise Mergers, Acquisitions and Buyouts by Ginsburg and Levin. I need to read sections of it for my tax LLM classes, but it's 4 volumes, and I think UPS said it weighed in at 12 lbs when I had it delivered. Not even remotely portable! That is pretty standard for legal texts. I look forward to legal treatises being available and storable en masse on the iPad (eventually). Sadly, I probably won't re-buy Mergers, Acquisitions and Buyouts. The paper copy cost me over $100 as a student, but full-on retail is like $400+.

Other than that, I look forward to there actually being some Manga. There isn't much of a selection for Kindle.

I'll be downloading a few of my favorite books right off the bat...

Neuromancer (William Gibson)
Mona Lisa Overdrive (Gibson)
The Catcher in the Rye (J.D. Salinger)
The Hobbit (Tolkien)
The Lord of the Rings (Tolkien)

If I feel up to the challenge, I may pull 3 in a row and grab Tolkien's "The Silmarillion" also. Haven't read that one yet.

I'll also download a few books on Photoshop - always good to have reference work available digitally :)

Semi-OT but also not really worth a new thread right now:

Does anyone know how easy it will be for me to get my existing non-DRM'd ebook library into the iPad? Mostly they are .rtf, .lrf, .html, managed with calibre.

Will any type of bible exist? That's a good question, probably a good 1GB of memory..

Check out Logos currently in the app store for the iPhone. While it runs kind of slow on my 2g iPhone, it is a great bible/bible study app. Not to mention the developer has already confirmed an iPad version.
